Rodrygo: Assessing the Real Madrid star’s best Premier League move
Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo is being pushed out of the door at the Bernabeu and there is no shortage of Premier League interest in the Brazil international. But with six of England’s biggest clubs chasing the 24-year-old, what should he do?
Rodrygo, it’s fair to say, hasn’t been in good shape since Xabi Alonso arrived in the Spanish capital. According to the local media, his run of 31 games without a goal is a record for a Real Madrid attacker.
The forward might be on a historically poor run, but there’s little doubt about the potential he possesses while his obviously peripheral status at Real Madrid opens to door to a possible transfer bargain.
With this in mind, Rodrygo has opened the door to a potential move to Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, according to TeamTalk.
An asking price of €80 million has been put on his head, which is a little steep compared to his current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €75.2m, but having previously been worth as much as €113m, there is little doubt that the talents of the mobile striker are not being fully exploited.
Rodrygo’s Premier League options assessed
Using SciSports’ Career Advice tool, FootballTransfers has calculated Rodrygo’s best options ahead of the January transfer window.
This gives teams a Club Fit score based on a variety of different metrics ranging from potential personal development and playing time to style and formation. The higher the score, the better the fit.
So which Premier League giant is Rodrygo best suited to?
Where should Rodrygo move?
6. Tottenham
Club Fit: 58
There’s not a whole lot to commend Spurs for Rodrygo. While Thomas Frank’s playing style is adequate for him, there are serious doubts over the formation that the Dane plays, which in turn could hurt the South American’s playing time.
With Frank’s future already on the line, a change of manager could make this a more viable prospect – or the whole system could be ripped up to accommodate Rodrygo, which might be just the type of change the North London side need.
5. Chelsea
Club Fit: 62
Rodrygo isn’t the type of profile that Chelsea have been signing in recent years, so the Stamford Bridge side probably won’t be too disappointed that he’d struggle to fit in. Yes, they are after a winger, but they do tend to favour buying potential rather than established talent.
Enzo Maresca’s style would fit Rodrygo nicely but this is offset by a formation that SciSports does not believe would get anything like the best out of the player.
4. Arsenal
Club Fit: 67
In terms of development, Arsenal would be a good option for Rodrygo, but SciSports are sceptical over whether he is better than what’s already at Mikel Arteta’s disposal. As such, he scores poorly in terms of his expected playing time at the Emirates Stadium.
He’s a nice fit in terms of style, though, grabbing five stars in that category. Still, a score of 67 is no guarantee of success.
Rodrygo's Premier League options ranked (SciSports)
| Club | Club Fit | |
| 1 | Liverpool | 77 |
| 2 | Man City | 70 |
| 3 | Man Utd | 69 |
| 4 | Arsenal | 67 |
| 5 | Chelsea | 62 |
| 6 | Tottenham | 58 |
3. Man Utd
Club Fit: 69
Of the Premier League’s Big 6, Rodrygo would be most likely to get playing time at Man Utd, according to SciSports. Given how frustrated he has been on the Real Madrid bench, that has to be a big tick in their favour.
Allied to this, Ruben Amorim’s playing style fits his beautifully, but the 3-4-3 formation, which the Portuguese is so attached to, may deny him the type of width he requires to show his best football.
2. Manchester City
Club Fit: 70
Pep Guardiola is a big fan of Rodrygo and considered signing him in the summer if Savinho left. For this reason, the one star that the Brazilian gets from SciSports in the Playing Time category may well be off the mark, even if it does highlight the type of competition that he would face.
City would offer Rodrygo both development opportunities and a strong fit in terms of playing style, but in a repeating trend, there are concerns that the formation would not get the best from him.
1. Liverpool
Club Fit: 77
The pick of the Premier League sides for Rodrygo is Liverpool, with the Reds scoring a Club Fit of 77 with solid marks across many of the key categories.
First up, Arne Slot’s playing style is a dream fit for the former Santos youngster, who would have both significant development opportunities and playing time.
Liverpool have shown they’re not afraid of spending big in the transfer market, so could Rodrygo move in the opposite direction as Trent Alexander Arnold did in the summer?
Rodrygo’s best option revealed
While Liverpool offer the best fit in the Premier League, SciSports reports that Bayern Munich would be his dream move. The Bundesliga side offer a massive Club Fit score of 86, with four stars in terms of development and playing time, plus five for style.
Rodrygo seems to have his heart set on the Premier League, though, and if that is the case, he would be best moving to Liverpool.
