Haaland all over again: Man City star to sign ‘contract for life’
Manchester City’s Phil Foden is ready to commit his long-term future to the club by signing what has been described as “a contract for life”.
England international Foden is poised to agree terms on a lucrative deal that will see him receive "a similar deal" to striker Erling Haaland.
The 25-year-old scored twice in City’s incredible 5-4 victory over Fulham on Tuesday and is set to be given more cause for celebration with his new agreement, TeamTalk reports.
Out of contract in 2027, there were concerns over Foden’s long-term future at the club when talks over a new deal were frozen. It is claimed this was done to allow the player to focus more on his football.
Now back in top form, contract talks have been reopened, and it is claimed by sources close to the situation that Foden “is looking to commit to City on a contract for life”.
Haaland signed an extraordinary decade-long deal with City in January, and now Pep Guardiola’s side are ready to repeat that trick with Foden, who is also ready to commit his future to the club until June 2034.
The source confirms: “A new deal for Phil was never in doubt, but both he and the club wanted to see him concentrate on his game, and he has reemerged from the summer as one of Europe’s top attacking talents, which we already knew he was.”
City now believe that Foden’s signature on the contract is inevitable.
Pep Guardiola: I hope Foden spends his career at Man City
Guardiola has made his thoughts on the matter clear.
“Hopefully he can stay all his career here. He’s a special player, a Man City fan from the Academy, there are no doubts on that,” the Catalan explained in quotes published on the club’s official website.
“If he wants to become a captain, yeah. But captains come from themselves and their behaviour on and off the pitch. It depends on him.
“On the pitch he’s always been a leader. He’s not a guy to talk much in the dressing room but on the pitch, he never hides behind the scenes or what’s going on.
“He always took responsibility from day one, he has an incredible presence on the pitch.”
