Arsenal Transfer News Today: Arteta confirms January plan as medical scheduled
FootballTransfers runs through the latest Arsenal transfer news, including updates on Gabriel Jesus and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
Gabriel Jesus update
Mikel Arteta has ruled out a January departure for Gabriel Jesus following significant rumours that he could leave Arsenal next month.
Speaking about the Brazilian before his side’s 2-1 win over Wolves on Saturday, Arteta told reporters: "No, I don't consider [his exit] and especially with the situation we have right now.
“I think Gabby has a lot to offer to the team and he is proving that straight away in the first minutes that he was available to play. He has put so much [in] to be in this position again and now the focus is to be with us.
“A player of his quality, a player who has given us so much and when he comes with the energy he did the other day, he is certainly a player who has to be pushing and aiming [to start], that's for sure.”
Takehiro Tomiyasu to join Ajax
Former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is set to join Ajax on a short-term deal until the end of the 2025-26 season.
The 27-year-old’s contract at the Emirates Stadium was mutually terminated in July, following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, and he is now on the verge of completing a free agent move to the Eredivisie giants.
This has been confirmed by BBC Sport, who report that a medical has been scheduled for Tuesday.
Jeremy Jacquet competition
Real Madrid have entered the race to sign Stade Rennais wonderkid Jeremy Jacquet, who had been earmarked by Arsenal as a potential centre-back signing.
This summer, Arsenal reportedly made a move to acquire Jacquet’s signature, however the 20-year-old rejected a transfer to north London to continue his development at Rennes.
The Gunners remain interested in signing the Frenchman next year, although they will face competition from both Liverpool and Manchester United, who have both expressed their desire to sign him.
Meanwhile, according to reliable transfer insider Matteo Moretto, Real Madrid are also keeping a close eye on Jacquet's development at Rennes.
William Saliba truth
William Saliba has opened up on his decision to sign a new long-term contract at Arsenal, having been strongly pursued by Real Madrid prior to his renewal.
Saliba has established himself as one of the world’s best defenders since breaking into Arsenal’s team three years ago and the Frenchman’s performances saw Real Madrid reportedly identify him as the future of their defence.
The 24-year-old’s previous deal with the Gunners was set to expire in 2027 and Real had been hoping they could convince Saliba to run down his contract and join them on a free transfer.
However the Arsenal star insisted it was an ‘easy’ decision to extend his stay at the Emirates.
“Because everything was complete for me,” Saliba told Arsenal’s website when asked why he chose to renew his deal. “We have a good team, we have a good coach, we have good staff. And I'm sure that the future here will be very good, so there was no hesitation to extend my contract with Arsenal.
“I spoke with my agent and with the coach as well, but it was more on me than anyone else. I had to think by myself and to be honest it was easy because I knew that I wanted to stay here and achieve great things. So for me it was an easy decision.
“Of course it can be a bit of a headache when you still haven't signed your extension and people are talking, so when you sign, afterwards you are much more chilled, you can be more focused on your football.”
