Created in 2009 in honour of the late Ferenc Puskas, captain and star of the Hungary national team during the 1950s, the FIFA Puskas Award is handed out to the player judged to have scored the best goal of the year.

The criteria are: an aesthetically beautiful goal, awarded without distinction of championship, gender or nationality.

Here's the nominees for the 2025 award.

Alerrandro (Vitoria v Cruzeiro)

After a poor touch from the opposition defender loops the ball into the air, on-loan Brazilian forward Alerrandro rises high and adjusts his body midair to send an emphatic overhead kick into the top corner.

Alessandro Deiola (Cagliari v Venezia)

Normally Puskas award nominees are feats of individual brilliance, but although this clip finishes with a spectacular strike into the top corner, it is the intricate interplay among the Cagliari players down the left flank which allows Alessandro Deiola to cap the move off with his superb finish.

Pedro de la Vega (Seattle Sounders v Cruz Azul)

Talk about keeping your eye on the ball...

Pedro de la Vega patiently sticks to his position to the left of the Cruz Azul box and watches a diagonal pass reach him before connecting with a magnificent side-footed volley back across the penalty area into the far corner.

Santiago Montiel (Independiente v Independiente Rivadavia)

This one evokes memories of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's incredible overhead kick against England and although this agile effort from Santiago Montiel may not be as far out, it is still struck with impressive venom - enough to take it beyond the keeper.

Amr Nasser (Pharco v Al Ahly)

What makes this overhead kick from Amr Nasser so impressive is the speed at which the ball is fired into him from the wide area. In a split second, he leaps into the air and connects perfectly with his attempt that flies past the goalkeeper.

Carlos Orrantia (Atlas v Queretaro)

As this clip starts, you think it's going to be a run-of-the-mill lob over the goalkeeper out of position. However, Carlos Orrantia deals with an oncoming tackle with a clever touch up and over, before another kneed touch into the air to tee himself up, while the resulting, looped strike is inch-perfect.

Lucas Ribeiro (Mamelodi Sundowns v Borussia Dortmund)

While most of the other entries on this list are feats of technique, this is one of sheer athleticism and raw running power. Lucas Ribeiro spots an opening in the Dortmund midfield and defence and emphatically burst through before finishing coolly past the keeper.

Declan Rice (Arsenal v Real Madrid)

A free-kick has to be pretty special to make it into the list of Puskas nominees but Declan Rice's effort against Real Madrid is just sublime. The camera angle behind the strike shows you how far the shot curls before nestling into the top corner. And - this was in a massive game.

Rizky Ridho (Persija Jakarta v Arema)

No Puskas Award nominees list would be complete without a halfway line effort and this one from Rizky Ridho is so interesting because you can spot the moment he decides to shoot as he moves around the ball to create the best possible angle for himself.

Kevin Rodrigues (Kasimpasa v Rizespor)

As the ball starts to fall from the air, you are begging Kevin Rodrigues just to give it a go and he does with gusto. The technique it takes to catch a volley when it falls from such a height, while also sending it back up and over the keeper into the top corner can't be understated.

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona v Espanyol)

This is fast becoming known as 'the Lamine Yamal' goal as the Barcelona star scores goals like this frequently. However, this effort against Espanyol was struck with so much authority the goalkeeper really had no chance between the sticks.
