Wharton has been of long term interest to the Red Devils, with Ruben Amorim tipped by some to make a big move for the Crystal Palace central midfielder in 2026.

The youngster is one of the most highly rated young central midfielders in the Premier League after bursting onto the scene over the past year or so.

He has also been linked with other big clubs such as Chelsea and Real Madrid, but it is United who are seen as his biggest fans.

However, in an interview with David Ornstein for The Athletic, Wharton didn't seem bothered by the interest in him.

What did Wharton say?

"I don't really look into it or think too much about it," Wharton said.

"There are always rumours floating about on social media. Is it true? Is it not? You tell me.

"My friends, my family, my brothers, everyone will message me and be like, 'Is it true this club's interested?' I'm like, 'Thanks for telling me because I didn't know.'

"I don't know who's spreading it or who at United is looking at it. I see it and I'm like, 'OK', and then I carry on with my day.

"United, the big teams, they're all linked to 10, 20 different players. If I'm one of 20, then it's nothing special, so it doesn't really mean too much. I speak with my agent about planning ahead and possibilities.

"But at the end of the day, it is who's interested and who's willing to try and get you and if that becomes the case?

"You can speak about it, but you've got to represent that on the pitch and prove that you deserve it."

It is likely that Wharton would not be available until next summer and he would not come cheap, with Palace likely to demand at least €80 million.

The midfielder has been labelled by some as the ‘new Declan Rice’ due to his ability as a holding midfielder.

Wharton arrived from Blackburn Rovers last year and he was even included in England’s squad for the 2024 European Championship after a stellar start to life at Selhurst Park.

He has made 57 appearances for Palace, winning the FA Cup and also being capped once by England.
