Mason Greenwood has announced his intention to stay at Marseille beyond this season.

The disgraced former Manchester United forward has been the subject of intense transfer speculation in recent weeks. Greenwood clashed with Marseille boss Roberto de Zerbi earlier in the season, and his future has been in doubt ever since.

The Italian tactician criticised him for his lack of application and work rate, although it is hard to argue with his impact in Ligue 1: Greenwood has netted an impressive 19 goals, second only to PSG superstar Ousmane Dembele in the scoring charts.

The 23-year-old has tried to win De Zerbi over again, but it has done little to quiet the rumours linking him with a potential exit this summer. Indeed, earlier this week, it was claimed that Marseille would listen to offers in the upcoming window.

Greenwood, it was asserted, was by no means considered 'untouchable' by the French giants and could have been used to fund new signings for next season's Champions League campaign.

Greenwood wants to stay

A potential sale of Greenwood would have been good news for Man Utd as they would have been owed 50 per cent of the profit generated by Marseille.

However, the former England international has now revealed his intentions of remaining in the South of France for the foreseeable future. “I hope to be here next year for the Champions League,” Greenwood said at a press conference on Friday.

“All the other players tell me that the stadium is something special. I think it’s been a very positive season, we’ve reached our objective. I feel at home here.

"I recently had a baby here with my girlfriend. Not a lot of people get to experience that kind of thing here and with all my teammates and coaches. I would like to thank them all."
