Manchester United have dropped the strongest suggestion yet that they are seriously considering a return for Mason Greenwood as he fights to regain fitness after 18 months out of the game, while former Old Trafford No.9 Wout Weghorst has found a new club.

Man Utd centre forwards have been involved in a persistent soap opera since Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault at the beginning of 2022.

These were subsequently dropped but in the interim, the Red Devils have seen Cristiano Ronaldo depart following an incredible broadside on the club, with Weghorst stepping in as his successor in an unsuccessful six-month loan from Burnley.

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, Greenwood remains frozen out of the picture at Man Utd following an internal investigation, the result of which is set to be made public later this week.

In the meantime, Greenwood is doing personal training sessions with a former junior coach in public parks.

United do, at least, seem open to the 21-year-old once-capped England international returning to the fold, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that the club are receiving data from these sessions.

If the Red Devils were going to dump the forward, it would make little sense to receive this.

The possibility of a season-long loan to get him away from the spotlight remains a possibility, and this data may help Man Utd sell Greenwood to another club, with interest reportedly coming from Serie A.

A source told The Sun: "Mason is working harder than ever on the training pitch. He’s desperate to return to the side as soon as possible and wants to put the last 18 months behind him.

"Talks about his future are in the final phase and the players and the manager are behind him.

"The only thing that remains to be decided is whether he returns to first-team action or goes out on a season-long loan."

Weghorst completes Hoffenheim move

Wout Weghorst will seek to bounce back from his tough Old Trafford spell, in which he scored only two goals and failed to register in the Premier League, at Bundesliga club Hoffenheim.

Weghorst, who was loaned to Besitkas before joining Man Utd last season, has agreed another one-year temporary switch to the Hoff from Vincent Kompany's Burnley.
