Rafael Leao has spoken about his future at Milan and potential contract negotiations with the Italian club amid rumours linking him with a move to Chelsea in recent times.

Leao was linked to Chelsea in the summer transfer period but the Blues considered it too late to make a move for the Portuguese and didn’t want to fork out a big fee.

They have retained their interest in the player with the hope of making a move in 2023 when the transfer window opens up, although it’s likely to be in the summer.

Now, Leao has spoken about his future with Milan and has admitted that he had a discussion about his contract just before he jetted off to Qatar for the World Cup.

Milan speaks on contract situation

There have been doubts about Leao’s future at Milan – he has a deal only until 2024 but the club have made it clear they want to renew his contract.

He is seen as an essential part of the team in the long run and Milan want to tie him down, which would also put them in a strong negotiation position in the event of a sale.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Leao said: "I am happy and proud. I have to stay focused on the World Cup then I’ll speak with Milan upon my return.

“Renewal? We already had a meeting with Maldini just before joining the national team, it was a positive meeting. Once I return to Milan we will discuss it better.”

Chelsea are one of the clubs greatly interested in him, along with others like Manchester City and Barcelona but a move for him won’t be cheap.

Given his age, talent and potential, Milan wanted €100 million for him in the summer and will demand a similar fee when the time comes once again in the next year.
