Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is Paris Saint-Germain’s summer transfer window priority, according to reports from France.

Pogba is out of contract with Man Utd in the summer and, apparently on the periphery of Ralf Rangnick’s plans, is set to leave as a free agent after a disappointing second spell at the club.

PSG are manoeuvring themselves into a position to sign the France international star, who is said to boast lavish contract demands that will likely put off many other clubs.

Foot Mercato even reports that PSG have already opened talks with Pogba, despite boasting a plethora of midfielders at present.

There are numerous reasons why the Ligue 1 champions elect are eager to complete a deal for the former Juventus man.

Four reasons PSG want Pogba

Quality

Man Utd fans may disagree, but there remains a high-quality player in Pogba if he is used in the correct manner. He may have foundered for the Red Devils, but with France he has been a star, in part because N’Golo Kante does so much legwork alongside him. If PSG can find their own Kante – they won’t get the original from Chelsea – he could be a highly effective arrival.

Profile

PSG love a player with a big media profile and Pogba certainly possesses this. It has led the club to making some rash decisions in the transfer market previously, but unless there is a change of direction from the boardroom, this is likely to remain the case. Pogba to PSG, therefore, makes sense from this perspective.

Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe has previously spoken of “new elements” that have influenced the decision over his future, with the indications that he could yet remain in Paris. Could the potential arrival of Pogba be what he hinted at? It’s certainly possible. The pair are great friends and the midfielder has been an important mentor to him in the France national team.

Symbolism

PSG are seeking to build a team with a greater French influence – and what better way to do that than sign a player who was so influential in the 2018 World Cup win? More than that, Pogba is a Parisian and has a strong local appeal. He is an ideal fit for the club in this regard, although he has been reticent about moving ‘home’ in the past because of the pressure he feels could be applied to him.
