Piers Morgan humiliated over Ronaldo defence: This is not a charity
Piers Morgan has been doing his utmost to defend Cristiano Ronaldo again.
The Portuguese superstar hit headlines during the international break after he walked away from the squad in the middle of the Nations League tournament. Ronaldo was an unused substitute by head coach Jorge Jesus in the match against Norway and wasn't brought on despite being told to warm up for an extended period.
CR7 took that as a sign of disrespect and promptly left the Portugal camp to return to Saudi Arabia, where he plays for Al-Nassr.
Jesus opened the door for Ronaldo to make a return in the future, but later reports suggested that would not happen while the current head coach remained in charge.
Ronaldo then insisted that he has not retired from international football and remains committed to Portugal despite leaving the squad.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Ronaldo said his departure followed a disagreement with Jesus over his expected playing time against Norway. He claimed he was told he would play around 30 minutes but was left on the bench despite warming up.
The Al-Nassr forward was also unhappy with Jesus’ comments after the game, saying they differed from what had been agreed privately. He apologised for leaving the camp and not greeting supporters, accepting that he may deserve punishment.
Despite the dispute, Ronaldo said he remains available for Portugal. However, at 41, his time at international level is inevitably entering its final stages, with only a limited number of opportunities likely remaining.
He was called disrespectful and egotistical by some for his actions, but he always has a staunch supporter in Morgan, who argued with TalkSPORT presenter Jason Cundy over the issue.
🙅♂️ "I'm sorry, this is NOT a charity game!"
🇵🇹 "That's the managers JOB. He doesn't owe Ronaldo ANYTHING!"

“Piers, this is not Soccer Aid,” Cundy said on Morgan's show. “We’re talking about elite-level football here.”
Morgan then butted in with a “what do you know about elite-level football?” line, forgetting Cundy is a former Premier League player.
“But no, seriously, Piers,” Cundy continued. “You follow Arsenal, right? You watch Arteta. Can you imagine Arteta promising [Martin] Odegaard to come off the bench? Can you imagine Odegaard doing the same thing?”
Morgan states that Jesus broke a promise to Ronaldo, but Cundy hit back, saying there are no promises in football, only plans.
"This is not a charity game!“ Cundy exclaimed.
"There are no promises, it’s a plan. I’ve been in the dressing room. I know what it’s like. Managers have plans. I’ve been in changing rooms on a Friday when the managers put the team out on and on Saturday he’s changed it. That’s his prerogative. He is allowed to do that. That’s his job.
“He doesn’t owe Ronaldo anything. His job is to get the best result for Portugal, and if he thinks by not bringing on Cristiano Ronaldo is the best way to get result, that is his job.”
The whole fiasco has divided a nation, with some Portugal fans on the side of Ronaldo and some on the side of Jesus.
