Rangers manager Danny Rohl has been targeted by Red Bull Salzburg in a move that would see the Ibrox boss depart with “immediate effect”.

Rohl took charge of the Glasgow giants in October as he picked up the pieces following Russell Martin’s disastrous reign, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Gers.

However, the German is set for a quick exit, with Sky Sport Deutschland revealing that the Red Bull group wants him to return to its stable.

RB Salzburg ‘in contact’ with Rangers over Rohl

Transfer insider Florian Plettenberg confirmed on X: “RB Salzburg are pushing to appoint Danny Rohl as their new head coach with immediate effect.

“Rohl, 37, has already worked for RB Leipzig and could, in principle, envision a return to the Red Bull group. He was also a candidate for a Red Bull head coach position last summer.

“The clubs are already in direct contact as they work on finding a solution.”

Rohl’s Rangers reign ultimately disappointing

Despite Rohl’s comparative level of success in turning Rangers’ season around, the Gers faded badly in the closing weeks of the campaign and finished a distant third behind Celtic and Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss’ side were criticised for a persistent tendency to fade in the second half of matches, which cost them valuable points and contributed to a run of four league losses in succession – the Ibrox club’s worst sequence of results in 42 years and only the second time in the 154-year history of the club such a low had been struck.

Following this run, there had been calls for Rohl to be sacked.

As such, his exit from Rangers will not be considered a disaster, yet it would come at a delicate point in the year at which the Glasgow outfit are seeking to rebuild for next season.

Who will be the next Rangers manager?

While there is no early standout to become Rangers’ next manager, it is likely that the Ibrox club will look to one of their former players to take the job.

Derek McInnes will be the favourite after leading Hearts to within three minutes of the Premiership title last season, while Neil McCann’s exploits with Kilmarnock are also likely to see interest appear for the former Scotland winger.

Barry Ferguson was tipped as a potential candidate for the job when it became available in the autumn, while Steven Gerrard remains out of work and, therefore, a figure who will likely be associated with a return to Ibrox after winning the league during his previous stint.
