Rangers icon Barry Ferguson has inadvertently announced the Ibrox club’s next move in the transfer market while speaking on the Five Stars podcast.

The Gers have elected to extend the contract of Scotland international goalkeeper Liam Kelly, Ferguson revealed in a move that had not previously been made known to the wider public.

Kelly, who has played as a backup to Jack Butland throughout this season after briefly winning the gloves during Ferguson interim stint in charge last term, arrived from Motherwell in 2024 on a two-year deal, and has now prolonged his stay at Ibrox.

Liam Kelly has signed new contract

Ferguson let slip the news while discussing the future of Butland on the Rangers podcast, stating: “I think Liam Kelly has extended already, hasn’t he?

“So yeah, two real good goalkeepers that push each other on. That’s the important thing.

“If one’s not playing then he’ll be disappointed, but he’ll push the other on and get behind him.”

Rangers take logical step to keep Kelly

It’s unsurprising that Rangers would want Kelly to remain at Ibrox given that he has proven to be a capable understudy.

Finding a goalkeeper happy to play second choice is not necessarily an easy task, and with Rangers likely to be busy in the transfer market this summer, it’s a headache they can do without.

As Ferguson pointed out, Kelly is a capable goalkeeper, too. The 30-year-old has more than 150 Premiership games under his belt after spells at Livingston and Motherwell, while he has crucially also shown he has the mentality to be second string.

He has played two matches under Danny Rohl, having been given the gloves in the first two Scottish Cup outings against Annan and Queen’s Park, though he was dropped for the quarter-final loss to Celtic on penalties.

While there has been general discontent around Rangers this season with much of the transfer work that has been done, securing Kelly’s future is a move that is liable to win popular approval.
