Real Madrid fans create a website counting down the seconds until Kylian Mbappe's departure
Fed-up Real Madrid fans have started a new website counting down the time, from years to exact seconds, until Kylian Mbappe's contract expires.
This past weekend, Los Blancos succumbed to a 2-1 last-minute defeat against Mallorca which has left them seven points adrift of Clasico rivals, Barcelona, in the title race.
Prior to that loss, they won five matches in a row versus Celta Vigo, Manchester City, Elche, Manchester City again and Atletico Madrid. Due to injury and fitness issues, Mbappe did not start any of those matches and missed two of them entirely.
Some Mbappe critics have pointed to a drop in performance after the Frenchman was restored into the starting XI, with his application, in particular, a source of anger.
Renowned presenter Josep Pedrerol, of the programme 'El Chiringuito', suggested that head coach Alvaro Arbeloa publicly call out Mbappe's lack of defensive contributions, just as Luis Enrique did when the pair worked together at Paris Saint-Germain.
“Mbappé is a brilliant player, but he hasn’t yet grasped the greatness of Real Madrid and what that badge represents," Pedrerol said.
"It is unacceptable to be lax in running or performing defensive duties.”
Marca, meanwhile, wrote: “Mbappe hasn’t scored – it’s unbelievable. Real Madrid need his goals. In fact, the team seemed to thrive in his presence. But his injury has also shown that the team is capable of coping without him.
“Mbappe didn’t feature in the five consecutive wins (apart from a few minutes against Atlético), yet the team continued to succeed. It’s not that Mbappé played badly, but he wasn’t exceptional either—nor was he poor.”
Remarkably, the World Cup winner has been the target for criticism from Real Madrid fans despite contributing 38 goals in 36 matches this season, including 23 in La Liga and 13 in the Champions League.
A new website has been created, www.mbappe2029.com, which counts down the seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years until his contract expires.
Not only that, but there is a live ticker that calculates in real time how much he has cost and continues to cost the club.
At the time of writing the figure stands at €126,479,087 and that doesn't even include a transfer fee as he moved for free from PSG.
Since having Mbappe in the squad, the only trophies that Madrid have won are the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
This week, they face Bayern Munich in a crunch Champions League quarter-final tie at the Santiago Bernabeu.
