Memphis Depay is on the verge of a move to Juventus as the Serie A side prepare to make an official offer for the Barcelona striker's services.

Depay has been declared surplus to requirements at Camp Nou following the signing of Robert Lewandowski, just one year after his move from Lyon.

The forward was included in the matchday squad for Barca's first La Liga game of the season against Rayo, but with the ex-Bayern Munich star and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both ahead of him in the club pecking order he is unlikely to see much first-team action over the coming campaign.

Barca are keen to remove the Dutchman in order to further reduce their wage bill, and Juventus now appears the most likely destination.

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano Juve will soon send through an official contract proposal to Memphis, after making strong progress in talks.

Once an agreement is sealed with the Serie A giants, and not a moment sooner, the forward will rescind his existing contract with Barcelona and report to Turin.

Xavi's thoughts on outgoing striker

When asked about Depay on the eve of Barcelona's La Liga curtain-raiser on Saturday, coach Xavi declined to comment.

“We will see what happens, we have to see from here until the end of the window,” he explained to reporters.

Depay, 28, joined Barcelona on a two-year deal back in June 2021 after leaving Lyon at the end of his contract.

The Netherlands international was one of the few bright spots early on in his debut season as Barcelona suffered a disastrous run of form under Ronald Koeman that led to his compatriot's dismissal, scoring eight goals in his first 14 Liga outings.

But in the rest of 2021-22 he would only add four more to that tally, as a succession of injuries and then Aubameyang's arrival from Arsenal saw him relegated to the bench after the winter break.
