The saga surrounding Frenkie de Jong continued, as it was reported this week that Barcelona have requested him to reduce his salary if he wishes to stay at the club.

De Jong has been the subject of a move away from the Catalan club, with Manchester United strongly interested in the player and they hope to bring him to Old Trafford.

It’s believed that De Jong is not as keen, and that he wants to sort out the issue surrounding his deferred wages before departing the Camp Nou.

However, if he’s unable to leave, Barcelona want him to accept a smaller wage package to ease their financial burden if De Jong wishes to stay at the club.

Tebas says Barcelona cannot pressure players

The Catalan club have faced plenty of criticism over this decision, with some even calling it unlawful and asking De Jong to report the club’s behaviour.

La Liga President Javier Tebas even spoke about the issue, saying it’s not fair what Barcelona are trying to do and that they can’t pressure their players.

He said: "The players cannot be split from the team or pressured - it's what collective agreement, the law, reason, ethics mark. From there, Barcelona knows the rules and the responsibilities".

Tebas also admitted that Barcelona are on the right track when it comes to being able to register their players ahead of the start of league season on 12 August.

This comes as a result of the activation of the economic levers which has given them more freedom to spend, and they should be able to use new signings such as Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha come to start of the campaign.

Tebas explained that selling their rights has given them this result, but will have to cut down on their wage bill as well as sell certain players to make up more money.

As of now, their new signings cannot play in La Liga yet, but they have about two weeks to amend that and it’s looking likely that things will change in that period.
