Augsburg defender Noahkai Banks has confirmed his decision to represent Germany over the United States is "final."

The 19-year-old had been the subject of an international tug-of-war until September, when it emerged that he had filed a one-time switch with FIFA to be able to play for Germany's U21s.

Banks, who had represented the US from the U17s to the U20s and received a first-team call-up in 2025, made his debut for Germany's U21s against Malta on 30 September. However, his outing was cut short by an injury from which he has yet to recover.

The centre-back could have made his first-team debut for the USMNT during that international break, but he turned down a call-up by Mauricio Pochettino and informed the manager that he had chosen to feature for Germany.

As the name suggests, once a player has filed a one-time switch, they can't change their international allegiance again, meaning that the Hawaii-born teenager is now cap-tied to Germany for good.

Banks explains Germany decision

Previously, Banks could potentially have played for the USMNT at the World Cup, but he announced in the spring that he did not want to let the promise of competing at a major tournament influence his decision and requested more time to reflect.

Once the projects for the new 2030 World Cup cycle became apparent - with the US keeping Pochettino, while Germany appointed Jurgen Klopp - Banks opted for the latter.

In response to the defender's decision, Pochettino said last month: "We want players who show commitment. Commitment is not 50%, it’s 200%. It’s good, he was honest. We want players who want to commit and are desperate to play for the badge. That’s the most important thing.

"We are a country where that situation will happen often," Pochettino added, referencing the US's perennial battle to convince dual-nationals. "The organization is so strong, US Soccer. The organization is bigger than any player."

In a recent interview with Sky Germany, Banks explained his decision and suggested that his reasons for picking Germany were not necessarily all sports-related. "The decision is 100% final, I'm now German," he began.

"My family and I thought about it for an extremely long time. That's why I didn't play the World Cup with America in the summer. [I chose Germany] simply because I grew up here, my stepfather is German, I feel more German, and I want to wear the eagle on my chest."

Banks was born in Honolulu to an American father and a German-Spanish mother from Stuttgart in 2006. He grew up in the Bavarian part of Swabia with his mother and German stepfather and has been with Augsburg since 2015. His biological father lives in Washington, D.C.

Prior to his injury, Banks had started and played the full 90 minutes in all of Augsburg's five matches of the new season. Highly rated from a young age, the 19-year-old established himself as a key player for the Bundesliga side in late 2025.
