Could Michael Zorc be on his way to Manchester United this summer?

The rumour mill has been packed full of reports linking Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho with a move to Manchester United, but what if he wasn’t the only individual to swap the Westfalenstadion for Old Trafford this summer?
According to a report in Kicker, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc looks set to depart the Bundesliga club after 23 years of pulling the strings.
Zorc reportedly planned on leaving the German giants in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the Dortmund boss to stay put and help his side through a difficult period that undoubtedly had huge ramifications on the club’s finances and transfer dealings.
The favourite to replace Zorc seems to be former midfielder and club captain Sebastian Kehl, who recently extended his contract at the club until 2022 after taking on an administrative role.
However, the real question seems to be where Zorc may end up after finally leaving Dortmund this summer.
Could the man famed with unearthing so many gems across Europe and bringing them to Dortmund be about to make the move to Manchester to do the very same thing at Old Trafford?

Although Zorc hasn’t made any public remark on where his career may take him next, the 58-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Man United in mid-2020.
According to Laurie Whitwell at The Athletic, Zorc had been identified by Ed Woodword in July as an ideal candidate to take over the role of director of football at United.
Although this would be seen as Woodword giving up a significant amount of power at United, it would probably be welcomed by fans of the club after United’s chequered success in the transfer window.
Indeed, rather than relying on other clubs to identify and nurture talent only to then charge exceptional prices when United show an interest in signing them, Zorc could simply cut out the middleman and bring Europe’s brightest young players directly to Old Trafford.
Not only would it save the club a fortune in the transfer window, but it would also offer manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a consistent conveyor belt of talent that he can implement into his squad rather than sporadic world stars that often need to be convinced and coached into the first team with considerable effort.
It remains to be seen what Zorc has planned after he brings his tenure at Dortmund to an end, but Man Utd may just be the perfect destination for him.
