The Red Devils are expected to launch an official first offer in the coming hours or days, and Fabrizio Romano has explained the state of play.

Romano has confirmed that it will take a giant offer to sign Baleba, and certainly one bigger than the record €105 million United paid for Paul Pogba from Juventus in 2016.

What did Romano say?

"They would also like to know the actual cost because with Brighton, it's never easy to negotiate, and they are very good at negotiations," Romano said on GiveMeSport.

"So in this context, they are having with the agents of the player, they are waiting to understand how much it will cost, because the rumour in the industry is something around £120million.

"But at the moment, Manchester United are still waiting to understand the final official cost for Baleba - to understand when and how to try to make a bid, and to try to approach Brighton for Baleba.

"For sure, the player is keen on the move, and the player is not closing doors to Manchester United even without European football. Baleba is keen on joining Manchester United, and now it will depend on the two clubs. My understanding is that Manchester United want to try."

Nicolo Schira says that Baleba already has an agreement in principle with United from the player side and has accepted a contract until 2030 with the option for a further year until 2031.

The deal will not be easy as Brighton are reluctant to sell their prized asset after losing Joao Pedro to Chelsea earlier this summer.

The Red Devils are looking to have a blockbuster end to the transfer window, having also confirmed the €85 million signing of Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig on Saturday.

Despite the fact that almost €250m has been spent without meaningful outgoings, Man Utd still plan to make more signings.

One area Ruben Amorim has been keen to strengthen ever since he arrived at Old Trafford is the midfield. The Portuguese wants more dynamism and energy in his engine room, and Man Utd are now seeking out potential options.

Signed as a replacement for Moises Caicedo after his move to Chelsea in 2023, Baleba has proved a worthy successor, and this hasn't gone unnoticed, with the Cameroon international regularly linked with bigger clubs.

Baleba has made 77 appearances for Brighton, scoring four goals.

He was named Brighton's Young Player of the Season last season.

He has been capped seven times by Cameroon.
