Liverpool have the best Premier League attack ever - even without Isak
Brace yourselves: Liverpool are coming and looking more spectacular than ever.
Fresh from cruising to the Premier League crown last season, Arne Slot’s side will begin their new campaign at Bournemouth on Friday. Don’t call it a title defence, though: this is a team that has been built with the intention of playing thrilling attacking football.
The Anfield club have already spent more than €300 million on summer transfers – and there’s more on the way.
Although centre-backs Giovanni Leoni and Marc Guehi could both hook up with the Merseyside club, the players who have already arrived are all geared to make Slot’s side the most dangerous to ever grace the Premier League.
A total of 86 goals were scored last term as Liverpool raced to the title. Look for them to obliterate that figure this time around. With the investment that has gone into the squad, Manchester City’s record of 106 strikes from the 2017/18 campaign will be under threat.
The secret to City’s history-making campaign was not one prolific scorer, but a well-rounded squad that boasted numerous threats. Sergio Aguero (21), Raheem Sterling (18), Gabriel Jesus (13) and Leroy Sane (10) did not trouble Mo Salah as top scorer that season, but together they were the type of potent mix that the Reds have replicated.
Forget Arsenal’s Invincibles, cast aside Manchester United’s treble winners and put Pep Guardiola’s legendary City teams in the bin; this Liverpool can outstrip them all.

An elite transfer window
Even before the summer, Slot’s attack radiated quality. Much of this, of course, emanated from Mo Salah. His 2024/25 campaign is unlikely to be repeated by anyone for at least a footballing generation, but even at 33 he remains a peerless talent in the Premier League.
Instead of being paired with the energetic but ultimately hapless Darwin Nunez in attack, Salah can look forward to a campaign in which he will play alongside (almost) equals. And that’s before considering the potential arrival of Isak, a centre-forward who ranks among the top three in the world.
Across the forward line, Liverpool have upgraded.
Hugo Ekitike will shoulder Salah at the forefront of the attack. The young Frenchman is expected to provide both goals and assists, having notched 23 goal contributions for Eintracht Frankfurt last season.
He’s made a promising start. It took him just four minutes to get off and running in the Community Shield with a brilliantly taken goal that gave Reds fans just a taste of what he is capable of.
Behind him will be Florian Wirtz, a player worthy of being the most expensive in Premier League history. Most excitingly for Liverpool, at just 22 years old, there remains enormous scope for him to improve.
A magician who has produced 34 goals and 33 assists across the last two seasons for Bayer Leverkusen, Slot has a truly generational star at the heartbeat of his forward line.
Frimpong can get the best from Salah – Slot
The Dutchman does not forecast the departure of assist-machine Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid as a problem either – and who would blame him after Jeremie Frimpong’s offensive contribution on debut against Crystal Palace?
"Trent brought the best out of Mo. Conor and Jeremie are different types of full-back, but I think the same thing is going to happen with Mo,” Slot said on Thursday.
“In my opinion, Jeremie and Conor Bradley are similar types - although Jeremie might be better in one-v-one situations than Conor.
“They both have attributes across all outputs, and if you play against them, you know you have to be aware of them.
“That usually gives Mo even more space for one-v-ones, because it’s difficult for the opposition when we isolate Mo or Jeremie.”
The best Premier League attack ever?
All this adds up to an exciting season at Liverpool. Of course, the ultimate goal is to regain the Premier League crown, but Slot has made providing entertainment – something often lost in England’s top-flight in recent years – a clear side mission.
Liverpool’s record goal haul in a Premier League campaign came in 2013/14, with 101 total goals. Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerard combined for an astonishing 66 strikes.
The Reds now have a more rounded and multi-faceted attack. It is a frontline capable of writing history.
Pace, power, craft, penetration, depth and efficiency: Slot has a toolkit to breakdown any defence. He does not just have the best attack in the Premier League; he may just have the best attack the league has ever seen, with or without Isak.
