Chelsea have reportedly failed in their pursuit of Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel, who is set to secure a move to a foreign club shortly.

The 16-year-old informed Man Utd of his desire to leave the club last month and his representatives have been locked in transfer talks with the biggest teams in Europe over the past few weeks.

The England youth international hasn’t trained with his Man Utd academy team-mates since asking for his contract to be terminated, and while the Red Devils hierarchy were initially confident of resolving the situation, it now looks highly likely that Gabriel will leave Old Trafford.

Man Utd have attempted to prove to Gabriel that a first-team pathway exists, having given him his debut during a pre-season friendly versus Atletico Madrid over the summer and including him in their senior squad photo for the 2026-27 campaign.

However, his camp are determined to finalise an exit, with the Red Devils’ lack of major trophies in recent years believed to be a contributing factor behind their decision to pursue a transfer.

Gabriel was due to make his competitive first-team debut during Man Utd’s Carabao Cup clash against Brighton & Hove Albion last month, but he informed the club of his desire to leave just days before the fixture and he was subsequently omitted from the matchday squad.

The teenager is eligible to join an overseas club due to the fact he holds an Irish passport, and his representatives have been in lengthy talks with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid over the international break.

Chelsea are also interested in poaching Gabriel, however it is far more difficult for the 16-year-old to join a fellow English club mid-season and talkSPORT claim that Xabi Alonso’s side have been told the Man Utd youngster “is leaving the Premier League for a move to a European giant.”

JJ Gabriel transfer advice

While it’s reported that Gabriel is close to securing a move away from Man Utd, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard believes the youngster is making a mistake.

Speaking about Gabriel’s situation on TNT Sports last month, Gerrard admitted: “It's not just in this situation. Broadly, it scares me in the game that kids can now be rushed and careers can be forced.

“I don't know the details and the background in this isolated situation with JJ Gabriel but, if you look at it all, he's at one of the biggest clubs in the world. They've got a history and a tradition of producing fantastic players.

“There will be top people behind the scenes at Manchester United but the big thing for me is, you've got an English coach [Michael Carrick] and an English assistant manager [Steve Holland] who will want to [play him]. When the time is right, and when they think he's ready, protect him... they will play him.

“Michael Carrick is from an academy, so he will want to play him. But it's not just in this situation, it's the game as a whole. I'm sure it's happening in other countries.

“These talents, they have parents, they have agents, outside influences that force and rush too soon, and it can affect a kid's career.”
