Aston Villa hand injured Amadou Onana new contract in ‘move of rare class’

Aston Villa are ready to show their commitment to midfielder Amadou Onana by extending his contract – despite the player set to miss much of the season due to serious injury.

Signed from Everton in a transfer worth £50 million (€60m) in July 2024, the Belgium international has established himself as a key figure at Villa Park, but will not play again this year after suffering an ACL injury at the World Cup.

FootMercato reports that Aston Villa are ready to show their faith in the 25-year-old by handing him a new deal.

New Onana contract: Official announcement soon

The Birmingham club are ready to present Onana a new contract in a move of “rare class”, according to the French source.

It is designed to show the club’s ‘affection’ for the player, but also represents a statement of faith as to his recovery from the setback.

Onana’s current deal with Aston Villa expires in June 2029. He will be given an additional two years on top of this, potentially keeping him at the club until he is 30 years old.

An official announcement is set to follow shortly.

< h2>Onana’s recovery from ‘devastating injury’

Onana suffered a serious knee injury during Belgium’s World Cup last-16 clash against the USA.

“Unfortunately, the medical examinations have confirmed that Amadou has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament,” Red Devils team doctor Brahim Hacene explained after the incident in July.

“We immediately consulted with Amadou and with Aston Villa to agree on the best approach to his recovery. Over the coming days, we will jointly determine the next steps in his medical treatment and rehabilitation.

“We will continue to provide Amadou with our full support.”

Aston Villa have yet to comment on the recovery process of the player, but the initial suggestion was that he would be sidelined for seven to eight months in the aftermath of his blow.

This puts him on track to recover for the end of the season, with the possibility of a return to action in February an optimistic outlook for the midfield workhorse.

Onana has established himself as a key player for Villa in terms of his industry, and with the club having had a huge turnover of players this summer, he would have been a central part of Unai Emery’s plans for the season.

He should still see action for Villa before the campaign is out but his ongoing absence clearly represents a huge blow to the Birmingham side.
