OFFICIAL: Chelsea confirm Danny Welbeck signing on two-year deal
Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton on a two-year contract.
New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has been determined to add experience to his young squad after missing out on a deal for Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka.
With Jordan Henderson also set to sign on a free transfer from Brentford, Welbeck joins from Brighton for an undisclosed fee, rumoured to be around €8 million.
“When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it's something that fills you with such immense pride," Welbeck said. "Knowing the history of Chelsea, it's a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season.
"I’m really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time. I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.
"I’ve got that fire in my belly and I'm ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
Danny Welbeck: New Chelsea signing will have significant impact on striker situation
Welbeck’s arrival should pave the way for Chelsea to move on at least one of their first team strikers, with offers being considered for Liam Delap and new signing Emmanuel Emegha.
Nicolas Jackson also faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge after his return from his loan at Bayern Munich last season, with Aston Villa reportedly keen on making a late move for him towards the end of the summer.
Chelsea’s record signing of Morgan Rogers from Villa means that another player isn’t allowed to move between the clubs within 45 days without being considered a swap deal financially.
The transfer deadline on 1 September would be the earliest opportunity for Jackson to move to Villa, meaning his future may drag on for the next month if another club doesn’t make their move.
Chelsea are now focusing on outgoings, with deals also being negotiated to sell Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah, while the signing of Rayo left-back Pep Chavarria is also being discussed.
