Man Utd offered chance to hammer final nail in Newcastle's coffin with smart deal

Manchester United are being linked with a surprising move for Newcastle forward Nick Woltemade, and it could actually be a sensible transfer.

The Germany international is coming off a mixed first season at St. James' Park. Signed in a hugely inflated club-record deal by a desperate Newcastle last summer, Woltemade initially hit the ground running.

However, after a while, the goals began to dry up, and he eventually appeared to lose the trust of then-coach Eddie Howe. He spent more and more time on the bench, which was a major source of frustration for the 24-year-old.

Heading into the summer, there were already question marks over his Newcastle future. With Yoane Wissa also having struggled last term, it was obvious that the Magpies needed to sign another striker.

This hasn't happened to date, and it has actually been yet another chastening transfer window for the club. Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have been sold, while Howe has resigned.

Man Utd eye Woltemade

Despite the lack of a striker signing, CaughtOffside now claims that Woltemade has been informed that he can leave Newcastle on loan before Deadline Day. The same outlet previously reported that the club would favour an outright sale.

This information contradicts what Sky Germany recently reported when it insisted that rumours linking Woltemade with a Newcastle exit were wide of the mark and that the player was looking forward to his second season at St. James' Park.

It is now asserted that Woltemade's alleged availability has attracted the attention of various clubs, including Man Utd and Liverpool. It is emphasised that they do not view the German as a priority target, but he is a player they still regard highly despite his hit-and-miss first season.

While a move to Man Utd or Liverpool looks far-fetched at this stage, Woltemade could actually be a good fit for the former, according to data analytics firm SciSports.

Analysing several factors such as potential game time, development prospects and stylistic fit, SciSports calculates a Club Fit rating. Man Utd, somewhat surprisingly, are believed to be his best option with a score of 77, albeit with one major caveat.

Woltemade is not believed to really suit Michael Carrick's playstyle - or at least the football he played during his interim spell. Man Utd are expected to develop their approach with the 45-year-old now in permanent charge, so this could become a moot point.

With Juventus pushing hard for the signing of Joshua Zirkzee, Woltemade could come in as a like-for-like replacement to offer Man Utd something different from Benjamin Sesko as a No.9 or Bruno Fernandes as a No.10.

The 24-year-old can play in both roles, and Man Utd need depth ahead of their return to the Champions League. A loan deal with a purchase option, as the report suggests, would be a low-risk move and could really be a no-brainer for the Red Devils.

That said, it would still be a huge shock if Woltemade were to rock up at Old Trafford before 1 September.
