Man Utd ready to accept summer sale to help sign Carrick's dream target
Manchester United are reportedly willing to sell academy defender Harry Amass amid their pursuit of Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall.
Amass, 19, spent the first half of last season on loan at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, before joining Norwich City on another temporary deal in January, and he is one of several academy stars who could be set to leave Old Trafford before the end of the summer window.
The England U19 international has just one year remaining on his current contract at Man Utd, and the club are willing to sanction a permanent transfer if they receive a bid worth around €8.2 million (£7m), according to a report from The Daily Mail.
Amass is currently the only natural back-up option to Luke Shaw at Old Trafford, with Patrick Dorgu now viewed as a winger, and his potential departure suggests that Man Utd are ready to ramp up their pursuit of Hall, who is regarded as their primary target for the remainder of the summer window.
The 21-year-old is seen as the perfect player to compete with Shaw for a starting XI berth this season and with Champions League football back at Old Trafford, the Red Devils believe they need two options at left-back in order to cope with the physical demands of additional football this season.
Hall played 46 times for Newcastle last season and he earned rave reviews for his performances against Lamine Yamal during the Magpies’ Champions League defeat to Barcelona.
In addition to Amass, fellow Red Devils youngsters Toby Collyer and Daniel Gore have also been tipped to depart before the window closes, with the club keen to raise funds through the sales of academy products.
Analysis: Will Man Utd sign Lewis Hall?
While Man Utd are open to offloading Amass on a permanent deal in order to raise funds, they remain unlikely to tempt Newcastle into selling Hall.
The England defender is likely to be one of Matthias Jaissle’s most important players this season and having already sold Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes so far this summer, Newcastle don’t need the funds.
So, Hall is expected to remain at St James’ Park until at least the January transfer window unless Man Utd lodge an extremely attractive offer before the end of Deadline Day on 1 September.
