Man Utd 'confident' of Hall signing in Baleba-type deal

Manchester United are not giving up hope of signing Lewis Hall and they are ‘confident’ that they can conduct a Carlos Baleba-style deal to sign him next summer from Newcastle.
Hall has been United’s ideal target to strengthen at left-back but a deal has not been pursued due to Newcastle’s insistence that the 21-year-old is not for sale at any price after a number of key departures this summer at St James’ Park.

With Hall now in talks to sign a new contract at Newcastle, United could now see out the summer transfer window without signing a left-back, although the likes of Alejandro Balde and Jorge Salinas are still being discussed as potential options.
However, reporter Ben Jacobs has claimed that, while a deal for Hall is ‘near impossible’ before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, United believe they have the player’s ‘buy-in’ to pursue a move for him next summer, as they did with Baleba last year before signing him this week.
“The signs from the Hall camp are he sees a very strong fit at Manchester United,” Jacobs told The United Stand. “So this is where Manchester United have got confidence, as they did with Carlos Baleba 12 months ago.
“A new deal doesn't mean not for sale,” he added. “My expectation is that Hall is either going to sign at Newcastle or push to leave. And if he signs, it still may be with the caveat that he can leave in 2027.”

Several reports had emerged this summer that Hall had become frustrated at Newcastle after missing out on a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup, having been dropped by former Magpies boss Eddie Howe towards the end of last season.
But, with Howe having departed this summer, Hall is understood to be close to signing a new contract with Newcastle and new manager Matthias Jaissle explicitly said last week that Man Utd have ‘no chance’ of signing his left-back.
United are now exploring their options and Jacobs believes the club may opt against splashing out on an alternative to Hall in order to ensure they have enough funds and space in the squad to sign him next summer.
“My perspective is it's more down to if they genuinely feel that they can get Hall in a year, then the last thing you want to do is get somebody that's a starting left-back of a certain age that could immediately become surplus to requirements within a year,” Jacobs said.
“They are still alert. They've not closed up shop and said 'no left-back,' but it's just maybe if they can find something either economical or short-term on a 'try before you buy' loan type formula, because that may allow them to make an assault on Hall in 2027."
