Arsenal Transfer News Today: Alvarez update arrives, stance on wonderkid revealed
FootballTransfers runs through the latest Arsenal transfer news on 9 August, including fresh updates on Julian Alvarez, Louis Page and Bruno Guimaraes.
Arteta wants Arsenal to keep strengthening
Mikel Arteta has pledged Arsenal will do everything they can to make more signings before the transfer window closes.
The Gunners have signed Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier ahead of the 2026-27 Premier League season.
Defender Piero Hincapie has also joined Arsenal after his loan move was turned into a permanent transfer this summer.
And Arteta insists he and Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta are willing to make more additions, provided the right players become available.
When asked if fans could expect more signings after the 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund in pre-season, Arteta said: “Well, that's what we're trying to do.
“If we have the right player in the market to make us much better. We are very looking forward to that."
Gunners behind Man Utd in race for wonderkid
Arsenal are currently behind Manchester United in the race to sign Leicester City wonderkid Louis Page, according to BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel.
Mokbel understands United are in talks with Leicester over a deal as they look to beat Arsenal and Aston Villa to the 18-year-old’s signature.
Page is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in England, with the midfielder having been named EFL Apprentice of the Year last season.
Page joined the Foxes at Under-9s level and signed his first professional contract with the club in September 2025.
Having inked those terms with Leicester, any club interested in signing Page would have to pay a transfer fee.
Arsenal target Alvarez will stay at Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone insists Julian Alvarez will not be sold this summer, amid speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal.
Various sources understand the north London club have a long-standing interest in Alvarez, who is regarded as one of the best strikers in the world.
Barcelona are also keen to sign the Argentina striker and had an undisclosed offer rejected by La Liga counterparts Atletico in July.
And now Simeone has made it clear that Alvarez will remain in the Spanish capital beyond the summer.
Ahead of Atletico’s pre-season clash with Manchester City on Sunday, Simeone told reporters: “The situation is very clear. The club made a decision that Miguel Angel [Gil Marin, Atletico CEO] explained very well.
“We are very happy with Julian, and from a sporting perspective we will help him to keep growing, to keep improving and to give us back what he has given us over these two years, which was a great deal.”
New boy Guimaraes gets first taste of Emirates Stadium
Arsenal unveiled new signing Bruno Guimaraes ahead of Sunday’s pre-season clash with Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium.
The Premier League champions ended one of the sagas of the summer when signing Guimaraes from Newcastle United for €87million (£75m) on Saturday.
And Arsenal wasted no time in presenting the Brazil international to supporters in the lead up to the Dortmund game.

Guimaraes watched on from the stands as his new side were beaten 3-2 by Bundesliga giants Dortmund.
Ethan Nwaneri and Viktor Gyokeres were on the scoresheet for Arsenal but their goals were not enough to help Arteta’s side avoid a second successive defeat in pre-season.
Arsenal were also beaten 3-1 by La Liga side Real Betis on Wednesday.
