Arsenal are facing a crossroads decision over Ethan Nwaneri, with the youngster desperately trying to save his career at his boyhood club despite emerging interest from rival clubs.

Nwaneri is touted as one of the brightest talents to come out of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, having made history when he became the youngest player to ever appear in the Premier League following his debut as a 15-year-old in 2022.

But, nearly four years on, things have not quite gone to plan for Nwaneri despite a breakout campaign in 2024/25 which saw him nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Last season saw the 19-year-old play just 166 minutes of Premier League football, all from the bench, before he eventually joined Marseille in January in a loan deal which may have harmed his reputation more than convincing Mikel Arteta of his credentials.

Nwaneri had a bright start in France but eventually fell out the first team after a public criticism of his work rate and attitude by Marseille’s manager, leading to a belief that Arsenal would look to cash in on their former golden boy this summer.

With Dortmund now reportedly among the sides considering a move for Nwaneri, the teenager has begun prove his worth during a make-or-break pre-season and ahead of a pivotal month in his young career.

According to The Sun, Dortmund are ‘tracking’ Nwaneri’s situation in case the attacking midfielder is made available for transfer this summer, with Arteta still yet to make a firm decision over the player’s future.

Milan have also been linked with a move, while Everton and Fulham represent domestic interest, proving that Nwaneri is still highly thought of by many teams even with a stutter in his trajectory.

Arsenal have not lost faith in Nwaneri and still believe in his huge potential, however Arteta spoke this week of wanting to raise the standards and quality in his squad after their title-winning campaign last season.

The Gunners are aware that receiving a major fee for Nwaneri would represent pure profit on their books, potentially giving more runway towards lucrative moves for top targets Vinicius Junior and Bruno Guimaraes.

Nwaneri also faces a roadblock with the likes of Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze ahead of him at attacking midfield, as well as 16-year-old Max Dowman, who appears to have taken the crown as Arsenal’s newest and brightest wonderkid on the block.

However, Nwaneri was utilised in a deeper central midfield role during a behind-closed-doors friendly against MK Dons last week, where he curled home a screamer from range, showcasing his determination to make the most of a pivotal pre-season.

The move suggests that Nwaneri still has a chance to save his career at the Emirates and that only a substantial offer which gives Arsenal some control over his future – such as a buy-back clause or a sell-on – would convince the club to sell him permanently.

Otherwise, while there is perhaps no prospect of consistent minutes in Arteta’s first team during the upcoming season, Arsenal could look to loan Nwaneri out again but to a more suitable environment than a somewhat chaotic Marseille.

Ultimately the decision will rest with Arteta and the offers Arsenal receive, as well as the progress in talks for Guimaraes and Vinicius, giving Nwaneri a few more weeks to fight for his future ahead of the transfer deadline next month.
