Chelsea Transfer News Today: Enzo Fernandez update as contract talks accelerate
FootballTransfers runs through the latest Chelsea transfer news, rumours and gossip, including updates on Enzo Fernandez and Sol Gordon.
Enzo Fernandez latest
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he wants to keep Enzo Fernandez at the club this summer following rumours that he could be sold for a fee of €140 million.
The Argentina midfielder has been heavily linked with a Stamford Bridge exit in recent months and it’s understood that he is eager to leave the club in order to complete a blockbuster move to Real Madrid.
However, Alonso has revealed that he has held talks with Fernandez ahead of the 25-year-old’s return to Chelsea after the World Cup.
“Yes, we have spoken but as you can understand what we have spoken remains private,” Alonso told reporters during his first press conference as Chelsea manager on Monday.
When pressed on whether he wants to keep Fernandez at the club, Alonso simply replied: “Yes.”
Sol Gordon contract talks
Chelsea have opened contract extension talks with academy winger Sol Gordon amid interest from Arsenal, as per Football Insider.
The 18-year-old’s current contract expires in 2027 and Chelsea are now reportedly accelerating discussions with his representatives over a new deal, with Arsenal, Bournemouth, Everton, Leeds United and PSV Eindhoven all eyeing a potential move.
Gordon scored 10 goals in 27 games in the U18 Premier League last season, while he also made two appearances in the Premier League 2.
Alejandro Garnacho offer
AS Roma have submitted their first offer for wantaway Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho, according to reports in Italy.
It’s understood that Chelsea and Garnacho have both agreed to pursue a permanent sale before the end of the summer transfer window, and he is yet to report to the Blues’ Cobham training base for pre-season as he explores his options.
Serie A side Roma have been heavily linked with a move for Garnacho in recent weeks and they have now lodged their first official bid, according to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio.
It’s claimed that Roma have submitted a €5 million loan offer, with the option to make the deal permanent for €35m next summer. If certain conditions are met, however, this clause will automatically be triggered.
Morgan Rogers latest
Chelsea have not yet ended their pursuit of Morgan Rogers, but Aston Villa’s hefty asking price remains a key issue, while the Blues also face significant competition from Arsenal.
That is according to The Athletic, who have confirmed that Chelsea want to sign a ready-made attacker capable of playing in multiple positions.
Trevoh Chalobah blow
Inter Milan have pulled out of the race to sign Trevoh Chalobah after deeming Chelsea’s €41million (£35m) asking price to be too high, according to reports.
The England international has been earmarked as a key target by Inter amid their pursuit of a new centre-back, but Italian publication Corriere Dello Sport understands Inter have withdrawn their interest in Chalobah after failing to convince Chelsea to lower their price tag during negotiations.
Fellow Serie A side Como are also interested in Chalobah, although they are yet to match Chelsea’s valuation either.
Marco Palestra war
New Chelsea signing Marco Palestra has been criticised by Inter chairman Giuseppe Marotta for reneging on an alleged agreement to join the San Siro club this summer.
In quotes carried by GOAL, Marotta said: “We already had an agreement with Atalanta for Palestra. It’s not that we pulled out of an agreement, let’s say the player made a lifestyle choice.”
However, Palestra’s agent Alessandro Lucci has rejected Marotta’s claim that an agreement had been reached with Inter, telling Italian news agency ANSA: “I listened with great sadness and at the same time enormous shock at the words of Inter president Marotta, who I’ve had a professional rapport with for over 25 years, doing many deals together.
“The Inter directors, represented by Piero Ausilio, carried on constant and constructive talks with us on the opportunity to complete this transfer. However, the element that decided the outcome was not described accurately in today’s press conference. Over 45 days the two clubs, who were in daily contact, were never able to reach a definitive agreement.”
Pep Chavarria deal could collapse
Finally, Chelsea’s proposed deal for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria could collapse, according to TEAMtalk.
It has been reported that Chelsea were initially told that a fee of €15m would be enough to sign the Spaniard, but Rayo Vallecano continue to demand €25m and the Blues are reportedly willing to walk away.
It’s understood that Xabi Alonso has asked the Chelsea hierarchy to sign his compatriot this summer, while Chavarria is eager to move to Stamford Bridge.
