AS Roma have made contact with Chelsea over a potential transfer for Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine has endured a huge fall from grace in recent seasons. Once regarded as the biggest prospect at Man Utd and a full international, Garnacho is no longer part of Lionel Scaloni's Albiceleste setup and has had to watch the World Cup from afar.

After being axed by then-Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim last year, the 21-year-old joined Chelsea following a saga that dragged on all summer. Even at a reduced price of €46.2 million, Garnacho now looks like an overpay from the Blues.

Just like fellow left-winger Jamie Gittens, who was signed for €56m, Garnacho was hugely underwhelming in his first season at Stamford Bridge. Most of his eight goals came in the domestic cups against lower-league opposition, although he did bag a brace in a loss to Arsenal.

Garnacho scored just once in the Premier League - still a better return than that of oft-injured Gittens - and his long-term Chelsea future is already in doubt less than a year on from his arrival.

Roma register Garnacho interest

The Argentine has shown little to suggest that he can reach the heights that were expected of him when he burst onto the scene at Man Utd as a teenager. Garnacho also isn't particularly well-liked by supporters.

As a result, it is thought that Chelsea are willing to listen to offers that would allow them to recoup the money they spent on the winger, or at least a decent chunk of it.

It is not surprising that Chelsea are among the clubs interested in West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville, who would be the obvious replacement - or upgrade - for Garnacho.

And the Blues may now have been offered the opportunity to offload the 21-year-old. According to Alfredo Pedulla, AS Roma have made contact with Chelsea to enquire about Garnacho.

The Italian journalist reports that his profile is "very much liked" by the Serie A giants, who are planning to be ambitious in the market after finally returning to the Champions League. However, the discussion has yet to progress beyond the stage of simply gathering information.

Chelsea have not made a decision on the player's future and aren't expected to do so until new manager Xabi Alonso has had the opportunity to get a look at him in pre-season. Roma would be open to either a loan or a permanent deal, provided they can afford Garnacho.

The Giallorossi's pursuit of the Argentine is independent of Marseille forward Mason Greenwood, who is also a target for Gian Piero Gasperini and company. Roma could look to sign both if the finances are right.
