Chelsea target Lucas Bergvall has told Tottenham Hotspur he wants to explore a move away this summer, according to The Athletic.

Bergvall joined Spurs from Swedish side Djurgarden in 2024 and has gone on to make 78 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.

The 20-year-old was a key fixture under former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, with whom he helped end the club’s 17-year trophy drought with victory in the 2025 Europa League final.

However, following Postecoglou’s dismissal in June 2025, Bergvall saw his playing time reduced under Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor last season, though the midfielder struggled with an ankle injury which required surgery in January.

But according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Bergvall - who is currently participating at the World Cup with Sweden - has now informed Tottenham of his desire to find a new challenge this summer.

The same publication reported in February that Spurs were facing a fight to keep hold of Bergvall after Chelsea expressed an interest in signing the youngster, with the Blues having an initial enquiry rebuffed by their London rivals.

A separate report from The Athletic understands Chelsea are keen to back manager Xabi Alonso in the summer transfer window, with the club looking to sign a new centre-back and a versatile attacker.

The same outlet understands the Stamford Bridge club are interested in Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, who The Telegraph say is believed to hold a valuation in excess of €92m (£80m), while the Daily Mail claims Alonso’s men are also admirers of Crystal Palace and France defender Maxence Lacroix.

Chelsea have also been busy regarding outgoings, with Marc Cucurella having completed a €60million (£52m) move to Real Madrid last week. The left-back signed a six-year contract with Jose Mourinho’s side.

The news that Bergvall wants to leave Tottenham comes as the club aim to support manager Roberto De Zerbi in the transfer market, with the Italian hoping to bolster his midfield options ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Spurs have had an offer in the region of €92million (£80m) rejected by Newcastle United for Sandro Tonali, according to BBC Sport, while The Athletic understands the club also hold an interest in West Ham United’s coveted midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Fernandes, who has also been linked with Manchester United, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to be available for €92m (£80m) following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League last season, as per The Times.
