Exclusive: Chelsea receive Nicolas Jackson transfer verdict
Ex-Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has told his former club to reintegrate Nicolas Jackson back into the first-team fold following his loan spell at Bayern Munich last season.
The Senegal striker was made available for transfer last summer after falling out of favour under previous boss Enzo Maresca, but Chelsea were only able to finalise a loan deal despite their desire to offload him permanently.
Jackson subsequently scored 11 goals in 34 games for Bayern, but Vincent Kompany’s side have decided against triggering their €65 million option-to-buy clause and the 25-year-old will therefore return to Chelsea after his participation at the 2026 World Cup.
Jackson found the back of the net on 30 occasions in 81 Chelsea appearances before his temporary exit last summer and ex-Blues striker Hasselbaink believes that new manager Xabi Alonso should give the Senegal international a chance next season.
"I’ve always liked him,” Hasselbaink told FootballTransfers on behalf of 10bet, who offer football betting. “I actually didn’t like him going to Bayern Munich when he left us in the first place.
“I’ve always said that he brings real energy to the team - he brings pressing, and he creates goals. Yes, he does miss a lot of chances, but he gets into those positions to miss them, and I think Chelsea could always use that profile.
“I wouldn’t mind at all if he comes back into the fold. I think Chelsea can really use him across different positions - as a central striker, but also coming inside from the left. If they can’t find another elite striker to strengthen the squad, then for me, I’d be more than happy for Jackson to stay and play a big part.”
Analysis: Will Chelsea keep Nicolas Jackson?
As things stand, Chelsea are yet to make a definitive decision on Jackson’s future at the club, although it has been widely reported that he will be given the chance to impress Alonso during pre-season.
Chelsea have already finalised the signing of Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha, who will officially arrive in July, but the club haven’t confirmed whether he features in Alonso’s plans or will be sent out on loan for the season.
Meanwhile, it’s understood that Jackson is in competition with Liam Delap for a place in Chelsea’s squad next year.
Rumours suggest that Chelsea will sanction the permanent sale of one of Jackson or Delap before the end of the summer window, despite the fact the latter only arrived from Ipswich Town last year.
While Delap showed promise at Portman Road, he endured a torrid debut season in west London and after only scoring two goals in 41 appearances last term, Chelsea would be wise to offload the Englishman and keep Jackson instead.
