Arsenal receive fresh update from Bruno Guimaraes as pursuit takes new twist
Bruno Guimaraes is interested in signing a new contract with Newcastle United despite receiving strong interest from Arsenal, according to The i Paper.
The 28-year-old is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders, having scored 31 goals in 195 appearances since joining the Magpies from Lyon in 2022.
Guimaraes has also earned god-like status at Newcastle after captaining the club to their first domestic trophy for 70 years with victory in the 2025 Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
And therefore Arsenal have become huge admirers of Guimaraes, with The Athletic reporting the Premier League champions tabled a verbal offer on Friday - via intermediaries - below €69.5million (£60m) for the Brazil star.
However, according to The i Paper, Newcastle have made it clear Guimaraes is not for sale after rejecting Arsenal’s approach, with Eddie Howe’s side keen to tie him down to fresh terms.
The same outlet claims Guimaraes is open to extending his four-and-a-half-year stay at St. James’ Park, even though his representatives are drumming up interest in his signature.
Guimaraes, who turns 29 in November, has just two years remaining on his deal, and a separate report from the Daily Mail claims he is not currently agitating for a move away.
Tonali is also wanted by Arsenal this summer
One player who could leave Newcastle however is Sandro Tonali, with The i Paper reporting the Italy international - who is valued at €115m (£100m) - is the most likely midfielder to depart.
BBC Sport understands Tonali, who turned 26 in May, is also being tracked by Arsenal, while the same outlet reported last week that Tottenham Hotspur had a bid of around €92m (£80m) rejected.
Like Guimaraes, Tonali has developed a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best central midfielders, having scored 10 goals in 110 appearances for Newcastle.
However, unlike Guimaraes, Tonali is contracted until 2030, according to BBC Sport, meaning Newcastle hold a strong hand in negotiations with interested suitors.
Newcastle are hoping to make their own additions ahead of the 2026-27 season, with several players being linked with a move to the North East.
Howe's men have already signed promising young goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, 20, from French outfit Reims, while The Athletic understands they have revived their interest in Manchester City shot-stopper James Trafford.
England international Trafford is a long-standing target for Newcastle, with Howe’s side coming close to signing him last summer, only for the 23-year-old to join Man City instead.
