Roberto De Zerbi’s first Tottenham signing announced
Andrew Robertson will be Roberto De Zerbi’s first signing at Tottenham, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that everything is in place for the Liverpool left-back to move to the London giants as a free agent in July.
Robertson’s contract at Liverpool will end on 30 June and Romano claims that there is an agreement in place that will see him switch to Spurs – as long as they avoid relegation.
Tottenham had faced competition from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Celtic for the Scotland star.
Andy Robertson agrees to join Spurs – Romano
Romano took to X to announce: “Tottenham have a verbal agreement to sign Andy Robertson in June 2026, all terms in place.
“Nothing signed/sealed yet as staying in Premier League will be a key factor ahead of proceeding.
“Robertson, ready to pick Tottenham project if relegation battle has positive outcome.”
There is no guarantee that Spurs will avoid the drop. De Zerbi will go into his first game as manager promising to bring back the style of Ange Postecoglou, but with his side in the relegation zone and bereft of confidence after last recording a Premier League victory on 28 December.
Spurs a solid fit for Robertson
Tottenham is seen as a good destination for Robertson by SciSports, which has a Career Advice tool that judges moves based on a wide variety of metrics ranging from potential development and pitch time to playing style and formation.
Spurs score a Club Fit of 72, which is a decent score.
Interestingly, it's De Zerbi’s old club Marseille that is rated as Robertson’s best option, with the Scotland star given a Club Fit of 82 for the Ligue 1 giants. The playing style imposed by De Zerbi in France is thought to particularly suit him.
The one doubt
There is, however, one significant caveat to Robertson’s switch to Tottenham, which arrives in terms of his playing time.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressly revealed that the former Hull City defender left the Reds due to a lack of playing time.
Speaking on Friday, the Dutchman said: “He didn't play as much as he was used to. Still a lot, but not as much as he's used to and as a result of that, he's leaving next season. Not only that, I think it's also difficult to be in that position longer than a season.”
Robertson is given only one star for playing time at Spurs by SciSports. He will find competition in the form of Destiny Udogie, providing the Italy international is not sold.
