Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha has made a bold Ballon d’Or claim – and it could create a selection dilemma at Anfield.

Article continues under the video

Ngumoha traded the Chelsea youth academy for the Premier League champions in 2024 and has made 23 appearances for Arne Slot’s side this season.

The 17-year-old has generated a good deal of excitement with his pitch time, scoring one goal, with many fans questioning why he has not been given more of a chance under the Dutchman.

Ngumoha is certainly not lacking in self-belief.

Asked what he thinks his career will look like in 10 years, he told Sky Sports: “I’m so confident in myself. Hopefully a Ballon d’Or – hopefully!

“Many club trophies with Liverpool, many Premier Leagues, many Champions Leagues, but being regarded as one of the best players who has ever played football.”

What does this mean for Liverpool?

Clearly, Ngumoha will be asking the manager – whether that’s Slot or his replacement – for more minutes in the near future.

A player with such ambition cannot be content with just 219 minutes of football so deep into the season.

This will have implications for Liverpool’s transfer plans. There are strong rumours that they are ready to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a huge fee, and while he is more comfortable on the right wing, the Reds are likely to seek to strengthen their options on the left, too.

Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon are three of the players they have been linked with for this role, underlining what a challenge it could be for Ngumoha to break into the team if the Reds do not put faith in him rapidly.

Can Liverpool back Ngumoha now, and will he be a Ballon d’Or contender?

Ngumoha is the most valuable U18 player in the world, according to FootballTransfers’ data. He already has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €26.2 million – nearly twice as much as Porto’s Oskar Pietuszewski, who arrives second.

He also eclipsed Leicester’s highly rated winger Jeremy Monga and Hertha midfielder Kennet Eichhorn, who have been linked respectively with Real Madrid and Manchester City in recent times.

This comes off the back of his exceptional performances in the first team. According to SciSports’ data, Ngumoha has been the second-best performing winger in the Premier League this season, although this should be judged with extreme caution due to his small number of minutes.

SciSports generally report 450 minutes are required to draw preliminary judgments over a player, with more accurate measurements over 900. The London-born star has not hit either of these figures yet.

Ngumoha’s incredible self-belief, meanwhile, suggests he has a promising career ahead of him, with the challenge for Liverpool now keeping him happy as he attempts to reach his Ballon d’Or ambitions.
