Jadon Sancho will leave Manchester United on a free transfer this summer when his contract expires but he could have already found his new club at his old home.

Sancho has proven to be a disastrous signing since joining United for €85 million in 2021 and he has not played for the club since 2023 after falling out of favour with then-manager Erik ten Hag,

The 26-year-old has also failed to impress on loan at Aston Villa this season and United will now opt against taking up the one-year option in Sancho’s contract and allow him to leave for free at the end of the season.

Sancho’s status as a free agent has seen some interest generate in him, including from his former club Dortmund, with sporting director Lars Ricken admitting they could bring back the winger for a third spell as a cut-price option.

“Naturally, we are looking for an attacking player who brings quality, can help us immediately, and doesn't require an exorbitant transfer fee,” Ricken told BILD.

“We are currently looking at a lot of players and analysing them. We are assessing whether they can improve our team. We are doing the same with Jadon."

Sancho set to rebuild career outside of England after Man Utd troubles

Despite being told for the past two seasons that he had no future at United, Sancho was reluctant to agree a permanent move away from Old Trafford due to his status as one of the club’s highest earners.

Chelsea had been open to keeping Sancho permanently after his loan spell last season but the English forward was unwilling to lower his wage demands, prompting the deadline day loan to Villa.

Sancho has played 19 Premier League matches for Villa this season but he has provided just two assists and failed to convince Unai Emery’s side of keeping him on further or proving his credentials at the top level.

In spite of his decline, Dortmund are considering Sancho’s signing as a replacement for Julian Brandt, who himself is set to leave the German giants on a free transfer in the summer.

Having had a breakout spell with Dortmund prior to joining United, the Bundesliga side signed Sancho again on loan in 2024 when they reached the Champions League final and he may end up returning yet again, with his time in England set to be over.
