Man Utd 'making moves' to hijack smart Arsenal signing
Manchester United are ready to rival Arsenal for the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.
The Germany international is out of contract this summer and has already announced that he will depart the Bundesliga giants. Bayern had been trying to get his hefty salary off the books for years, but Goretzka managed to stay and fight for his place.
His determination was rewarded with a starring role in Vincent Kompany's side, but this won't change the fact that the 31-year-old will be forced to pursue a different challenge after this season.
Atletico Madrid and Tottenham expressed an interest in the midfielder in January, before Arsenal also tried to explore a late-window move when Mikel Merino suffered a long-term injury. However, Goretzka wanted to see out the season in Munich.
With the summer now approaching, the serial winner is fielding interest from even more clubs, particularly from Serie A. AC Milan, Inter and Juventus are all said to be vying for his signature.
Man Utd "make moves" for Goretzka
Arsenal, too, are still keeping tabs on the veteran, and it was recently claimed that Goretzka would prioritise a move to the Premier League over Serie A. However, the Gunners won't have a free run at his signing.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Man Utd have also begun "making moves for the free agent," which further complicates the matter for his Italian suitors.
Goretzka is believed to be demanding an annual salary of at least €7 million, and this is simply too much for Serie A clubs. Arsenal and Man Utd, though, would be ready to offer him a lucrative contract.
Despite his age, Goretzka has shown that he can still perform at an elite level. He is expected to start for Germany at the World Cup, and his physical style of play would be perfect for the Premier League.
With Casemiro set to leave Man Utd on a Bosman, Goretzka could replace his experience and winning mentality, while still enabling the Red Devils to pursue one of their marquee targets, given that signing the Bayern star would not require a transfer fee.
