Anthony Martial’s career has taken another drastic fall from grace after the former Manchester United star was banished from his club in Mexico following an outburst on the sidelines.

Martial was once the most expensive teenager in football history after joining United in 2015 but he failed to live up to expectations and his nine years at Old Trafford were plagued with injury and inconsistent performances.

The Frenchman was eventually released in 2024 and, perhaps surprisingly, he failed to find a new club until September that year when he joined Greek outfit AEK Athens on a three-year deal.

After just one year in Greece, Martial joined Monterrey last summer for €1 million but his time in Mexico has been disastrous, with just one goal in his first 21 matches.

His troubles compounded last week when he reacted furiously to youngster Joaquin Moxica being brought off the bench ahead of him during Monterrey’s 3-2 defeat to Chivas.

His indiscipline led to manager Nicolas Sanchez punishing Martial by forcing him to train away from the first team for the indefinite future and throwing his future at the club into doubt.

Martial’s career collapsing after repeated failures

Martial had won the European Golden Boy award the year he joined United as a 19-year-old but, despite a bright start to his career, his time with the club led to much frustration from fans and supporters over his attitude and fitness.

Now 30-years-old, Martial’s career is fizzling out into despair and the situation at Monterrey could be the final blow to his chances of thriving at a top-level club.

Having seen French teammate Paul Pogba be given an opportunity at Monaco, Martial may have felt he could have worked towards a fairytale return to France but his poor form and behaviour has all but made the forward a forgotten figure in Europe.

Martial is still contracted to Monterrey until 2027 but it remains to be seen whether he is given a way back into the squad and whether he can recapture his best form or be forced to end his career as another ‘what if’ story about a failed wonderkid who never lived up to his potential.
