Elliot Anderson’s £80m dilemma: Instant stardom or the long climb to greatness?
Elliot Anderson faces a transfer decision that goes beyond picking between Manchester United and Manchester City – it’s a choice between immediate rewards and the tougher climb to greater heights.
Anderson’s departure from Nottingham Forest feels inevitable. The 23-year-old has achieved all he can at the City Ground, where his only remaining goals are Europa League glory and avoiding Premier League relegation.
And the big guns are circling. Man Utd have made Anderson their top target are ready to “make a substantial effort” to sign him in the summer but face competition from City, who have been billed by BBC Sport as the “clear frontrunners” for the England ace.
With a €92.5 million (£80m) price tag placed on his head by Forest, the deal that takes him to Manchester is liable to be one of the biggest of the summer.
The team he chooses, meanwhile, will say a great deal about his career goals: does he want immediate stardom or the possibility of long-term greatness?
Elliot Anderson: Man Utd vs Man City
The battle for Anderson is currently being fought between Man Utd and City, and overall it’s a close run thing, according to data analytics firm SciSports.
Its Career Advice tool gives players guidance as to their best options in the transfer market based on numerous different factors ranging from development and game time to playing style and formation.
While United and City score 72 and 70, respectively in terms of their Club Fit scores calculated by SciSports, the two Manchester clubs are, in reality, very different options for the 23-year-old.
Instant impact at Man Utd – but at what cost?
Manchester United is the club of instant gratification for Anderson, according to SciSports.
It believes that he could go to Old Trafford and hit the ground running, at least in terms of earning playing time. He scores a perfect five stars when it comes to earning minutes.
Clearly, this is an attractive proposition, particularly if the Red Devils are back in the Champions League next term – something that is looking increasingly probable.
Just how much he will be able to make of those minutes is less certain and will, to some extent, depend on who the next permanent manager is.
Currently, SciSports does not rate United’s set up for maximising Anderson’s potential. The Red Devils score one star both in terms of playing style and formation. Michael Carrick may not be the man to get the most out of the former Newcastle star, then.
In the long term, too, there are worries over Anderson being able to reach his maximum. United earn just two stars in terms of development in a warning to the player that he could pay for his ample game time with a career that plateaus in terms of its level.
Potential to be forgotten at City
At City, he faces the prospect of a different problem.
Pep Guardiola’s side score well in terms of development, playing style and formation, but what the Etihad side cannot offer him is immediate playing time. Instead, they earn just two stars in this regard.
This is largely due to the depth of talent in City’s ranks. Even allowing for the likely departure of Bernardo Silva, they still boast Tijjani Reijnders, Mateo Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez and Rodri who are all vying for a central midfield spot.
He needs only look at the likes of fellow England stars Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips as a stark warning at what can happen to those who come up short under Guardiola.
In turn, though, SciSports believes that this is likely to propel Anderson to reach a higher level than he might strolling into the Man Utd team.
Time to gamble
Any transfer is about taking a calculated risk, and for Anderson this summer, this is no different.
What is unusual is the stark contrast of the gamble he can take: will he go to United and put his long-term development on the line, or will it be City, where he faces the possibility of dissolving into just another player.
