Chelsea’s summer plans may just have been changed because of a serious injury to transfer target Joaquin Panichelli.

The Blues were one of a number of clubs studying the Strasbourg hitman, with FootballTransfers exclusively revealing late interest from Manchester City during the winter transfer window. Pep Guardiola’s side were said to have seen him as an alternative to Erling Haaland, whose form has dipped this season.

But Ligue 1’s leading marksman has also been linked with the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham and Atletico Madrid.

Panichelli faces ACL nightmare

Panichelli’s dreams of a summer transfer move appear to have gone up in smoke, however.

The 23-year-old appears to have suffered a season-ending ACL injury that will cost the Argentine his World Cup dream and could feasibly see him sidelined until early 2027.

The Argentine FA announced: “On Thursday, the player suffered a trauma to his right knee. He will undergo tests on Friday.”

L’Equipe has indicated that those close to the player fear the worst ahead of his return to France to undergo tests.

Coming back stronger?

This is the second such devastating injury that Panichelli has suffered in his career. He looked upon his previous injury as a blessing.

“I worked on my mental game and, upon my return, I was a much better player than before. I never suffered and I saw it more as an opportunity to improve,” he said.

His challenge facing this fresh setback is how to retain that mindset given he was on the verge of a massive breakthrough personally.

Panichelli remains under contract with Strasbourg until 2030 and is not the type of player whose game requires particular speed. He should, therefore, be able to make a full recovery physically.

Chelsea’s silver lining

Chelsea had earmarked the striker as a potential signing in the summer, but the silver lining for the Blues is that this means Emmanuel Emegha – who is already moving to Stamford Bridge – will get additional game time.

The Dutchman has had a season decimated by injury, limiting him to just 11 appearances, scoring seven times.

He is on the verge of a comeback, so Chelsea will hope he has a strong end to the campaign and arrives fit and firing in West London for pre-season.
