Official: Chelsea confirm wonderkid contract agreement
Chelsea defender Landon Emenalo has officially signed a new long-term contract at the club until 2031.
The England U18 international has been a pivotal player for Chelsea’s youth teams over the past few years and he is widely expected to be rewarded with a first-team debut at some point in the near future.
Emenalo, who is the son of former Chelsea technical director Michael, joined the Blues at Under-8 level, before returning to the club as an Under-13 following a short stint with AS Monaco, and he is now a regular for the club’s Under-21 side.
The 18-year-old, who signed his first professional contract at Stamford Bridge last January, has made 27 appearances for Chelsea’s youth teams this season, providing four assists.
Emenalo has featured in first-team training sessions under the past three Chelsea managers - Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior - and he has featured in the matchday squad for three senior matches so far in his young career, without yet making his debut.
He most recently appeared on the substitutes bench during Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Paphos in the Champions League in January, although he wasn’t selected for recent FA Cup victories against Hull City or Wrexham, unlike fellow academy star Jesse Derry.
Emenalo is predominantly a left-back, but he is also capable of playing at centre-back or in central midfield.
Landon Emenalo signs new Chelsea contract
Emenalo has become the latest Chelsea wonderkid to agree a new contract with the club, following in the footsteps of Genesis Antwi, Reggie Walsh, Chizaram Ezenwata, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and Ibrahim Rabbaj, who have all penned fresh terms with the Blues so far this season.
As well as impressing Chelsea’s youth team coaches, Emenalo has also received the John Terry seal of approval. Back in September, the Blues legend said: “Landon is a very good footballer. I think he plays for the first team and comes through.
“He currently plays left-back, he’s not a left-back, he can play left centre-half, he prefers to play in midfield as a six. A big future, a really good player.”
