Chelsea react to Enzo Fernandez exit hint with 'record-destroying' offer
Chelsea are reportedly prepared to rip up their wage structure in order to secure the long-term future of star midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Following the club’s 8-2 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions league last-16, the Argentina international hinted that he could look to leave Stamford Bridge after the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, but Liam Rosenior’s side have no intention of sanctioning a sale.
Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are known admirers of Fernandez, while several unnamed clubs in the Saudi Pro League are also reportedly keeping close tabs on his situation in west London ahead of a potential summer swoop.
However, the 25-year-old’s current contract at Chelsea isn't due to expire until 2032 and the reigning Club World Cup champions are ready to pour cold water on rumours that Fernandez could depart by offering him a new contract.
It has previously been reported that Fernandez and fellow midfield star Moises Caicedo are both keen to be rewarded for their recent form with an increased salary, and Chelsea are now ready to engage in advanced talks with the former, as per TEAMtalk.
Verdict: Enzo Fernandez to sign a new Chelsea contract?
It’s claimed that Chelsea are preparing a “record-destroying contract” in an attempt to retain Fernandez’s services beyond this summer.
The Blues have a strict incentivised wage structure in place, but they are ready to disregard this policy in order to keep Fernandez, according to TEAMtalk. In fact, it’s reported that Chelsea could offer the 25-year-old a weekly salary of roughly €460,000 (£400,000).
If this is true, and Fernandez agrees to these terms, he would become the highest-paid player in Chelsea’s entire history.
However, Chelsea’s hierarchy have shown very little desire to move away from their current strategy since their arrival in 2022 and Fernandez may therefore still look to move elsewhere, especially if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.
It’s understood that he is open to joining Real Madrid this summer, while TEAMtalk report that Bayern Munich and Manchester City are also keeping tabs on his situation ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
Despite this, Chelsea boss Rosenior is optimistic that Fernandez will remain at the club. Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea's trip to Everton on Saturday, Rosenior said: "I had a great conversation with him [Fernandes], not just about his comments but his feelings and how we can improve. He made it really, really clear to me how happy he is at this club. In translation and in the moment, things get misconstrued."
In addition to Fernandez, it’s reported that Chelsea are also set to reward the aforementioned Caicedo with a new and improved contract, although it remains to be seen if both players to extend their spells at Stamford Bridge.
