The agent of Florian Wirtz, Liverpool’s €125 million summer signing, has spoken about his client’s failed move to Real Madrid last summer, according to Fichajes.

The agent, Volker Struth, said he aimed to complete a deal that would have seen Wirtz reunite with then-Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso, who the attacking midfielder played for at Bayer Leverkusen.

Instead, Wirtz signed for Liverpool in a deal that held the record for the most expensive incoming Premier League transfer ever, until the Reds broke it again later in the 2025 summer window with the €145 million signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle.

Struth claimed to have presented Real Madrid’s leadership with a proposal, only to be told that it was not the right time for a transfer to the Spanish capital.

Would Wirtz fit in at Real Madrid?

Part of the appeal for Wirtz to join Los Blancos was the presence of Alonso, who has since been dismissed from his post.

But with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler, and Brahim Diaz on the books at the Bernabeu, Wirtz would have had to fight for his place.

Madrid have not paid a transfer fee over €100 million since signing Bellingham for €113 million in 2023. The club has taken a youth-focused approach, as shown by the signings of Franco Mastantuono, Endrick, and Guler. Bellingham joined at age 20, which at the time was two years younger than Wirtz is now.

Still, Struth said that Wirtz is the type of player who can improve any team.

The German No. 10 struggled after joining Liverpool. He provided an assist in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace, but he went without a league goal contribution until his 16th appearance in the English top flight, a streak that lasted from August to December.

Since breaking the duck, he has scored four goals with two assists, including scoring and assisting in Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at the end of January.

Wirtz also ranks tied for 11th — along with teammates Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai — in the league with 4.1 expected assists, and he is seventh in total chances created with 44.

The player’s agent may still be pining for the fee that would come with another transfer, but things are looking up for the player on Merseyside.
