Man Utd surprise as AFCON star surges up transfer shortlist
Manchester United full-back Noussair Mazraoui is surging up Juventus' shortlist of targets, according to Italian media.
The Morocco international is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations and preparing for a semi-final clash with Nigeria after securing a 2-0 victory over Cameroon on Friday.
Man Utd have sorely missed their AFCON stars in recent matches, although Mazraoui's absence has perhaps caused the least discomfort because he has been restricted to just a handful of appearances so far this term.
A couple of niggling injuries and Man Utd's lack of European football meant that the 28-year-old played just nine games before jetting off for AFCON, totalling a measly 443 minutes.
He did, however, get a run of games before the tournament and has been virtually ever-present for his country. Barring another injury, he will return to Man Utd at the peak of his powers.
Mazraoui chased by Juventus
Despite this, Mazraoui's future at the club is up in the air. Due to the uncertainty that currently reigns at Old Trafford, there is no guarantee that the Moroccan will feature in the plans of whoever ends up replacing interim boss Darren Fletcher.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are looking to exploit this uncertainty. The Bianconeri already explored a move for Mazraoui in the summer, and his potential signing is gaining increasing support within the club.
The report states that Juventus' transfer plans have shifted in recent weeks. The arrival of Luciano Spalletti and the encouraging form of the manager's preferred midfield partnership have convinced club chiefs to reconsider their priorities.
Signing a midfielder is no longer on the agenda. Instead, Juventus are targeting a winger - Liverpool's Federico Chiesa is the preferred choice - and a versatile defender, capable of playing at right-back.
Mazraoui fits the bill, but the report acknowledges that nothing is imminent. Whether a move is possible will only become clearer once he returns from AFCON and Man Utd have a new head coach, be it interim or permanent, in place. His current deal in Manchester still runs until 2028.
