Raheem Sterling FINALLY leaves Chelsea by mutual consent
The Raheem Sterling saga has finally come to a close at Chelsea.
The club announced that the former England international left the club by mutual agreement on Wednesday, 28 January.
Sterling scored 19 goals with 12 assists in 81 appearances between the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, but he was never able to reach the heights he hit during his Manchester City tenure.
Sterling was signed for €56.2 million from Man City ahead of the 2022/23 season. He was coming off a campaign with 17 goals and eight assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.
Now 31 years old, the former Liverpool and Man City star had long been out of favour in southwest London.
Sterling was caught in the transitional period when Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the club and pivoted to a youth-focused model. The veteran winger’s wages, thought to be above €300,000 per week, were prohibitive when trying to offload him permanently.
Disappointing Arsenal loan sealed Sterling’s fate
He was loaned out to Arsenal last season, where he worked under Mikel Arteta, who Sterling credited with raising his game during their time together at Man City.
Sterling could only manage one goal with five assists in 28 matches for the Gunners. Two of his assists came in the Champions League, when he started the second leg against PSV after his teammates built up a 7-1 aggregate lead after the first leg.
His lone goal was in a 5-1 Arsenal victory over Bolton in the League Cup third round.
After Sterling was unable to recapture his magic at the highest level under a trusted coach, he’ll now focus on the next step of his career.
As a player with a big reputation who is past his best, Saudi Arabia or MLS may be the most likely destinations for the Englishman with 82 caps to his name.
