Celtic are on the verge of securing the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach striker Tomas Cvancara, according to German media.

The Hoops have been desperately searching for attacking reinforcements this month as the striker position has proved to be one of the weakest areas in the team.

However, the sackings of Wilfried Nancy and Paul Tisdale in early January complicated the matter, forcing Martin O'Neill to step into the breach for the second time this season. In addition to sorting out results on the pitch, the 73-year-old has also had to hold talks with transfer targets.

A host of players have been linked with Celtic in recent weeks, but it has now been revealed that the Parkhead club are on the verge of making a surprise signing. According to Sky Germany, the Hoops are set to add Borussia Monchengladbach forward Tomas Cvancara.

The Czech Republic international recently terminated his loan at Antalyaspor due to unpaid wages and returned to Gladbach. It was thought that he could be given a second chance to show his talents in the Bundesliga, but it quickly became clear that he was surplus to requirements.

Celtic to sign Cvancara

Cvancara joined the German giants for a sizeable €10.5 million in 2023 after impressing at Sparta Prague, but he has proved to be a massive disappointment. He only scored eight goals for the Foals in 54 appearances.

Gladbach have been trying to get rid of him for some time, but no permanent exit materialised in the summer, hence the move to Turkey. He is now set to join Celtic, having already agreed personal terms.

The Hoops are finalising a loan deal with Gladbach that will contain an option to make Cvancara's stay at Celtic Park permanent. It looks to be a smart deal. Given his recent track record, it would have been foolish to immediately commit to a permanent signing.

The 25-year-old will have the chance to revive his career in Glasgow. He previously scored 24 goals in 49 appearances for Sparta Prague, so he has shown that he has the ability to score regularly in the right environment. Time will tell if Celtic can provide such an environment.
