Surprise Marcus Rashford twist paves way for €200m Barcelona signing
Atletico Madrid are interested in Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford, which could potentially pave the way for Barcelona to sign Julian Alvarez.
The 28-year-old is enjoying a brilliant season on loan at Barcelona. Rashford has netted seven goals and provided 11 assists in 27 appearances so far and even returned to the England fold ahead of the World Cup.
Naturally, Barcelona want to keep hold of the winger beyond this season. On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Catalans have already held talks with Man Utd to renegotiate their purchase option.
Although Rashford, who currently has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €52.2 million, would be a steal at €30m, Barcelona are keen to get a cheaper deal or to potentially agree a second loan for next season with a conditional purchase obligation.
Despite the sacking of Ruben Amorim at Man Utd, Rashford is not thinking about a return to Old Trafford and has made it clear that he has his heart set on staying in Catalunya.
Rashford has other suitors
However, should Barcelona fail to agree a deal with Man Utd, Rashford would have contingency options available to him. According to CaughtOffside, the 28-year-old has admirers at Atletico Madrid and PSG.
PSG previously tried and failed to sign the England star, and it is understood that Rashford has no interest in moving to France. A move to Atleti, on the other hand, would allow him to remain in Spain.
The Madrid giants are said to be keen to pair Rashford with striker Alexander Sorloth, which suggests that Atleti have resigned themselves to losing superstar forward Julian Alvarez.
The Argentine has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona to replace Robert Lewandowski, with some reports going so far as to suggest that Atleti have slapped a €200m price tag on him.
Alvarez has publicly left the door ajar to a potential transfer away from Atleti in the summer, and it is difficult to imagine that he would not be keen on a move to Barcelona. In a way, then, Rashford may surprisingly hold the key to the Blaugrana's ability to land Alvarez.
