Arteta reveals Arsenal January transfer strategy amid wonderkid rumours
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has outlined the Gunners’ plans for the January transfer window while underlining the importance of Ethan Nwaneri to the club’s Premier League title challenge.
Nwaneri has been linked with a shock move to Chelsea this month in the wake of a disappointing start to the campaign.
The 18-year-old has not enjoyed the game time he would have wished and, following Kai Havertz’s return from injury, was not even stripped for the 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Tuesday.
Asked about the future of Nwaneri, who has not played since featuring against Club Brugge on 10 December, in his press conference on Friday, Arteta said: “Every player is very important, every player has a role.
“That role can change throughout the season for different reasons & everybody has to be ready to play. That’s it.”
Arsenal’s stance on Nwaneri has surprised some critics, who believe that at this stage of his career, he should be playing more regular first-team football. In particular, there are fears that if a player as strong as Eberechi Eze is struggling to get minutes, the teenager faces an even greater squeeze on his opportunities in the second half of the season.
Arsenal’s January transfer plans: Arteta open to all possibilities
Arteta also discussed the possibility of players arriving at the club. He revealed that any deals that are going to be will likely be with an eye on the long-term development of the team, though he would equally not rule out seeking a quick fix should the right option arise.
“We are open to every option,” Arteta said, referring to permanent transfers and loan deals. “Obviously, if we can find a solution that is short, medium or long. It's always much better because it gives you stability and you don't have to constantly start a process with a new player.
“But let's see what happens, let's see what the news is in the next few weeks, and we'll try to make the right decision.”
Arsenal have been linked with Elche midfielder Rodrigo Mendoza but have yet to complete any deals this month.
