Man Utd target former goalkeeper to solve midfield problems
Manchester United are ready to spend around €30 million on a former goalkeeper to plug the gap that Ruben Amorim feels that he has in midfield.
The Red Devils face the prospect of losing Casemiro as a free agent next summer as there is a gulf between what the club is offering and what the Brazilian is willing to accept, while Amorim does not seem to fancy Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo in that area.
Instead, the Portuguese and Man Utd’s recruitment staff are tracking Olympiacos wonderkid Christos Mouzakitis, according to the Daily Mail.
Mouzakitis has already established himself as one of the brightest prospects in a golden generation of young Greek players, with his club slapping a €30m asking price on his head.
He is one of the top performers in midfield in the domestic Super League and has delivered two assists already this season.
National team honours have already come his way, with the youngster, who will celebrate his 19th birthday on Christmas Day, having already won seven caps for Greece.
Christos Mouzakitis: Premier League transfer battle heating up
United had Mouzakitis watched as Olympiacos ran Real Madrid close in the Champions League. They were edged out 4-3 in a thriller, in which Kylian Mbappe scored all four goals for Los Blancos.
Mouzakitis played the duration of that match, with his display catching the eye.
The Red Devils were not alone in tracking the promising youngster that day. Chelsea and Arsenal also had scouts in attendance.
According to Nicolo Schira, Brighton have already had a €40m for the player turned down.
He reported on X in October: “Olympiacos turned down a very rich bid (around €40m) from Brighton for the young talent Christos Mouzakitis (born in 2006) during the last summer transfer window.”
While this suggests that the Seagulls are seeking a potential replacement for Carlos Baleba, who is another Man Utd target, it also serves to show the widespread admiration of Mouzakitis from Premier League teams.
What makes Mouzakitis so special?
Mouzakitis is a player whose style can be compared to Brighton’s most famous midfielders of recent times. According to data analytics firm SciSports, he is closely aligned in style to the holy trinity of Caicedo, Mac Allister and Baleba – three players currently starring in the Premier League for different teams.
Gradually becoming a regular starter for Olympiacos, he has caught the eye with his passing this season, delivering two assists and showing a consistent capacity to create opportunities for his team-mates in the league minutes he has earned.
Mentally, he also appears to be a player built for the big occasion. During last season’s Europa League, he posted a decisive pass against Porto in the group stage and then two as Olympiacos fought back unsuccessfully from a 3-0 first-leg deficit in the opening knockout stage.
