Manchester United are stepping up their chase of Olympiacos wonderkid Christos Mouzakitis, but their attempts to lowball the Greek club could come back to bite them as Real Madrid are also firmly in the race.

The 18-year-old midfielder is quickly emerging as one of Europe's most promising prospects, and Man Utd's interest in him is well-documented. Already a seven-time senior Greek international, Mouzakitis is being chased by seemingly half of Europe.

According to TEAMtalk, Man Utd director Jason Wilcox is pushing hard for the signing of the teenage prodigy, and the report claims that the Old Trafford outfit's interest dates back to Dan Ashworth's short-lived stint at the club.

Olympiacos have 'resigned themselves' to losing Mouzakitis, it is claimed. They would prefer to keep hold of him until the end of the season, but they are believe that it may be difficult to turn down January bids that match their valuation.

For now, though, no offer has matched this valuation, which reportedly stands at €30 million to €40m. In fact, Greek outlet Sport Time insists that Olympiacos will not be lowballed.

Man Utd offer not even considered

The report claims that Olympiacos will not even consider offers below the €30m mark. So far, Man Utd have attempted to agree a bargain deal for around €28m, but they are set to be left with egg on their face.

There is a concrete chance of the Red Devils missing out on Mouzakitis as Real Madrid are showing a willingness to go higher. While Los Blancos' bid has also not yet reached Olympiacos' expectations, they have so far offered more than Man Utd.

These two clubs are said to be pushing the hardest for the midfielder, although the report doubts that either will be ready to go as high as €40m for the still relatively inexperienced youngster.

This is good news for Olympiacos and their chances to keep hold of him beyond January. Indeed, TEAMtalk claims that a summer move is the 'most likely outcome.'
