Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly ready to switch to a 4-3-3 formation as he prepares for the imminent absences of Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Red Devils head coach has exclusively lined up in a 3-4-2-1 shape since his appointment at Old Trafford last November and he has been widely criticised for his refusal to adapt his system.

Man Utd have only won 22 of Amorim’s 57 matches in charge across all competitions, but he has continuously insisted that his preferred formation isn’t the issue.

However, the 40-year-old is now prepared to alter his tactics, according to a bombshell report from The Athletic.

It’s claimed that Man Utd have spent a “significant amount of time” training in a 4-3-3 shape ahead of their Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Monday evening as Amorim prepares to adapt his system in response to the imminent departures of Amad, Mbeumo and Mazraoui.

The Man Utd boss also reportedly informed his squad that “a change is coming” before their victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last week, and he hinted that a tactical alteration could be in store during his pre-match press conference on Friday.

What has Ruben Amorim said?

“We need to adapt a little bit the way we are going to play the games, and that is a good opportunity to do that because we cannot think that we are going to play the same way without Amad, Bryan and Nous [Mazraoui], but especially Amad and Bryan because of the characteristics. That is really hard to get,” Amorim told reporters ahead of Man Utd’s clash against Bournemouth.

“They have more or less the same characteristics, the both of them, and we are losing them for a few games. But it’s a good opportunity for us to try to play in a different way.”

Amorim added: “I think we need to work on the variability of the way we play, especially in the build-up. I think I need to find different ways to take all the juice from the team, from the squad. I’m just trying to find out solutions to win more games.”
